The only distractions that would have caught drivers? attention in times gone by would have been the occasional wayward deer or the kind of devilish smog that brought the capital to a standstill for a four-day stretch back in 1952.
Now the advent of new technology has meant that motorists? ability to keep their eyes on the road is being challenged by a constant onslaught of visual and auditory information from their host of in-car gadgets.
From radios to sat nav distractions, drivers are only able to hold out a paltry nine seconds before their eyes are averted from the task at hand.
A new study commissioned by insurer Direct Line, which utilises the latest eye-tracking technology to record drivers? eye movements, found that drivers spend 18% on their time behind the wheel focusing on anything but the road.
The research revealed that drivers? eyes are fixed on sat nav displays for 12% of their total journey time, six times longer than the time they spend watching oncoming traffic.
The average driver spends just 3.2% of the total journey time checking their mirrors, while clouds and scenery capture a staggering 7% of drivers? attention on the road.
Just 2% of drivers? time is spent looking at oncoming vehicles, while 0.6% in spent looking at road signs. Not only that, but just 3% of drivers? time is spent watching pedestrians.
?For the first time we know exactly where people focus their eyes when driving and the results are frightening,? said Simon Henrick, spokesperson for Direct Line.
?Even when drivers appear to be watching the road, by tracking movements in the cornea we now know they are often watching clouds or shop window displays.?
Stonehenge, Wiltshire emerged as the landmark most likely to capture drivers? imaginations as they put rubber to the road, with more drivers involved in accidents passing the site than at any other British landmark.
The recent research, from MORE TH>N, also placed the Angel of the North in second place with Blackpool Tower in third.
