MOSCOW, ID - Almost 600 Moscow Middle School students completed the final leg of their cumulative half-marathon Monday.

Moscow Middle School was one of 50 schools in the nation to receive a grant from ING to create a running fitness program that fights childhood obesity by teaching kids about cardiovascular health. Students completed segments of the half marathon in gym class over the last eight weeks.

"I've seen the kids from day one, when it was really hard for them," said Moscow Middle School P.E. Teacher Jessica Shawley. "And some of those kids who have never been runners before, by the end of this, they have finished strong, they felt proud of themselves, they get some awards, they get some prizes."

Monday's run was only 1.2 miles, but each student totaled more than 13 miles. They were also required to keep a journal of their running goals. Everyone was thankful for the beautiful weather on the Palouse Monday because last year the students had to brave the cold and snow to complete the run.

Moscow Middle School qualified for the grant because of its high-quality PE teachers.
