Murdoch's papers, others condemned in phone-hack report

Senior British judge Brian Leveson is set to release the findings of his yearlong inquiry into phone-hacking and media ethics by newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch and others.

By Carol Grisanti, Keir Simmons and Ian Johnston, NBC News

Updated at 10:35 a.m. ET: LONDON -- Rupert Murdoch?s newspapers and other British media were reckless in the pursuit of sensational stories ?almost irrespective of the harm? caused, according to a major report on Britain's?phone-hacking scandal.

The findings of the year-long Leveson Inquiry criticized a ?failure of systems of management and compliance? at Murdoch?s News of the World (NoTW) tabloid, which was closed down as the full extent of their illegal actions became clear.

Lord Justice Leveson said if Murdoch and his son James did not know about the extent of phone-hacking at the paper, then there had been a "determined cover-up" by unidentified staff.

And if they had known then the Murdochs should have done something about it, he said. However, the judge added there was no evidence from which he could "safely infer" that Rupert Murdoch was aware of a wider problem.

The report is being watched by American lawmakers amid concerns that U.S. laws may have been broken.

Leveson did not recommend state regulation of the media ? or censorship in the eyes of some ? as some victims of press intrusion had demanded, but did propose a new self-regulatory body enshrined in law.

The inquiry was set up after it emerged that people working for the News of the World had hacked into messages on a phone belonging to?Milly Dowler, 13, while she was a missing person in 2002. She had been abducted and was murdered.

A string of other examples of phone-hacking and other examples of press intrustion then emerged.

?At the News of the World, quite apart from phone-hacking, there was a failure of systems of management and compliance,? the report said.??There was a general lack of respect for individual privacy and dignity.?

The report said it was not just Murdoch?s newspapers that were at fault.

?There has been a recklessness in prioritizing sensational stories almost irrespective of the harm that the stories may cause and the rights of those who would be affected (perhaps in a way that can never be remedied),? it said.

?Too many stories in too many newspapers are the subject of complaints from too many people,? it added.

But Leveson was particularly scathing about the Murdoch empire, saying there had been a ?serious failure of governance? at the News of the World, News Corporation and its U.K. arm News International.

?There was a failure on the part of the management at the NoTW to take appropriate steps to investigate whether there was evidence of wrongdoing,? he said. ?Although I endorse the right of any business to seek to protect its reputation, it surely must first take every step to get to the bottom of what had happened.?

Author J.K. Rowling and actress Sienna Miller testified at the Leveson inquiry, addressing the emotional pain they experience after having their privacy invaded by tabloid reporters. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

'Determined cover-up'
Leveson said if Rupert Murdoch and his son James were kept in the dark then ?one or more parts of the management at the NoTW was engaged in a determined cover-up to keep relevant information about potential criminal activity within the organisation from senior management within NI.?

?? if James Murdoch had been the victim of a cover-up, or an attempt to minimise the gravity of the position, then the accountability and governance systems at NI would have to be considered to have broken down in an extremely serious respect,? he added.

Leveson said there was ?no evidence? from which he could ?safely infer that Rupert Murdoch was aware of a wider problem.?

But Leveson noted Rupert Murdoch did not appear to have followed up -- or arranged for his son James to follow up -- on the instructions Murdoch said he gave to Colin Myler, editor of the News of the World from 2007 to 2011, to ?find out what the hell was going on.?

Actor Hugh Grant took a starring role on Monday in a London courtroom, where he testified at a public hearing about alleged phone hacking by British tabloids. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

?If News Corporation management, and in particular Rupert Murdoch, were aware of the allegations, it is obvious that action should have been taken to investigate them,? Leveson said.

The report noted evidence given to the inquiry that News International had been ?obstructive? during an early police investigation into phone-hacking.

?The approach taken by NI is far from what might be expected of a well-run corporation ? An organisational culture that is founded on integrity and honesty would require not only full co-operation with law enforcement, but also a determination to expose behaviour that failed to comply with the law,? the report said.

?What happened at the NoTW in relation to voicemail interception in this context is particularly informative about the culture that pertained both within the corporate and editorial operations," it added.

Leveson said that what was needed was a ?genuinely independent and effective system of self-regulation.?

The current Press Complaints Commission includes members of the media industry, but Leveson said the new body he was proposing should have no ?serving editors or members of the House of Commons or government.? He also said that the new body should?be recognized in law.

He said he was ?struck by the evidence of journalists who felt they might be put under pressure to do things that were unethical or against the [press standards] code.?

To address this, he said there should be a new whistleblowing hotline and the new board should ?encourage? media firms to include a ?conscience clause? in their employment contracts to protect them if they come under pressure to do something unethical.

U.S. senator: 'Deplorable conduct'
Senator Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate commerce committee, signaled he will be paying close attention to the findings of the report.

In an emailed statement sent to NBC News before the report was released, he called on investigators in the U.K. to hold media companies accountable for their ?deplorable conduct.?

The parents of murdered school girl Milly Dowler told the Leveson Inquiry how her phone had been hacked into when she went missing, giving them false hope that she may still be alive. ITV's Damon Green reports.

Rockefeller said that he feared that illegal journalistic practices may have been used on U.S. citizens.

He said he hoped Leveson?s report and other investigations would ?continue to clear the air? and hold the media organizations involved ?accountable for their deplorable conduct.?

?While I understand that the main goal of this report is to make policy recommendations, the core of the inquiry remains the illegal and unethical practices of newspapers owned by the News Corporation,? Rockefeller said.

?I remain deeply concerned that these companies may have violated U.S. laws and injured U.S. citizens,? he added.

Britain's former Prime Minister Tony Blair admitted he was very close to News International as Prime Minister - but he told the Leveson Inquiry it was a working relationship, not a close one. Testimony was briefly interrupted by a protestor who accused Blair of being a "war criminal." ITN's Tom Bradby reports.?

Former top aide to UK PM David Cameron charged in perjury case

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson, who was later hired as Cameron's chief media adviser, and Rebekah Brooks, the former CEO of News International, appeared in court Thursday to face charges related to allegations of corrupt payments made to public officials, ITV News reported. They were later released on bail.

LONDON (AP) ? Britain needs a new independent media regulator to eliminate a subculture of unethical behavior that infected segments of the country's press, a senior judge said Thursday at the end of a yearlong inquiry into newspaper wrongdoing.

Lord Justice Brian Leveson said a new regulatory body should be established in law to prevent more people being hurt by "press behavior that, at times, can only be described as outrageous." But Prime Minister David Cameron balked at that idea, warning that passing a new law to set up the body would mean "crossing the Rubicon" toward state regulation of the press.

Leveson issued his 2,000-page report at the end of a media ethics inquiry that was triggered by revelations of tabloid phone hacking and expanded to engulf senior figures in politics, the police and Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

His proposals will likely be welcomed by victims of press intrusion and some politicians, who want to see the country's rambunctious press reined in. But some editors and lawmakers fear any new body could curtail freedom of the press.

Cameron welcomed Leveson's proposal for a new regulator with powers to settle disputes, order corrections and fine offenders.

But he said that asking legislators to enshrine it in law meant "crossing the Rubicon of writing elements of press regulation into the law of the land."

"I believe that we should be wary of any legislation that has the potential to infringe free speech and a free press," Cameron told lawmakers in the House of Commons. "In this House which has been a bulwark of democracy for centuries, we should think very, very carefully before crossing this line."

Leveson insisted in his report that politicians and the government should play no role in regulating the press, which should be done by a new body with much stronger powers than the current Press Complaints Commission.

He said "what is needed is a genuinely independent and effective system of self-regulation."

But Leveson said it was "essential that there should be legislation to underpin the independent self-regulatory system."

"The ball moves back into the politicians' court: they must now decide who guards the guardians," he said.

He said the new body should be composed of members of the public including former journalists and academics ? but no serving editors or politicians. It should have the power to demand prominent corrections in newspapers and to levy fines of up to 1 million pounds ($1.6 million).

Critics of the tabloid press generally welcomed the report.

Former Formula One boss Max Mosley, who sued Murdoch's News Corp. for invasion of privacy over claims he had taken art in a Nazi-themed orgy, said Leveson's report went in the right direction, although "I would have liked to see more."

Campaign group Hacked Off said Leveson's proposals "are reasonable and proportionate and we call on all parties to get together to implement them as soon as possible."

Cameron set up the Leveson inquiry after revelations of illegal eavesdropping by Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid sparked a criminal investigation and a wave of public revulsion.

The furor erupted in 2011 when it was revealed that the News of the World had eavesdropped on the mobile phone voicemails of slain schoolgirl Milly Dowler while police were searching for the 13-year-old.

Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old newspaper in July 2011. His U.K. newspaper company, News International, has paid millions in damages to dozens of hacking victims, and faces lawsuits from dozens more, from celebrities, politicians, athletes and crime victims whose voicemails were hacked in the paper's quest for scoops.

Leveson heard evidence from hundreds of journalists, politicians, lawyers and victims of press intrusion during months of hearings that provided a dramatic, sometimes comic and often poignant window on the workings of the media. Witnesses ranged from celebrities such as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Hugh Grant ? who both complained of intrusive treatment ? to the parents of Dowler, who described how learning that their daughter's voicemail had been accessed had given them false hope that she was alive.

Leveson said that the ongoing criminal investigation constrained him from accusing other newspapers of illegal behavior, but argued there was a subculture of unethical behavior "within some parts of some titles."

While many editors have denied knowing about phone hacking, Leveson said it "was far more than a covert, secret activity, known to nobody save one or two practitioners of the 'dark arts.'"

More broadly, he said newspapers had been guilty of "recklessness in prioritizing sensational stories almost irrespective of the harm the stories may cause."

"In each case, the impact has been real and, in some cases, devastating," the judge said.

The hacking scandal has rocked Britain's press, political and police establishments, who were revealed to enjoy an often cozy relationship in which drinks, dinners and sometimes money were traded for influence and information.

Several senior police officers resigned over the failure aggressively to pursue an investigation of phone hacking at the News of the World in 2007. But Leveson said that "the inquiry has not unearthed extensive evidence of police corruption.

Leveson said over the past three decades, political parties "have had or developed too close a relationship with the press in a way which has not been in the public interest."

He acquitted senior politicians of wrongdoing, but recommended that political parties publish statements "setting out, for the public, an explanation of the approach they propose to take as a matter of party policy in conducting relationships with the press."

Cameron is under intense pressure from both advocates and opponents of a new law to set up a press regulator. He is also tainted by his own ties to prominent figures in the scandal.

Former Murdoch editors and journalists charged with phone hacking, police bribery or other wrongdoing include Cameron's former spokesman, Andy Coulson, and ex-News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, a friend of the prime minister.

Coulson and Brooks appeared in court Thursday on charges of paying public officials for information.

Cameron called on the press to implement Leveson's proposals quickly.

"While nobody wants to see full statutory regulation, the status quo is not an option," he said. "The system of press regulation we have is badly broken and it has let down victims badly."

U.S. soldier in WikiLeaks case says he was held in a 'cage'

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - A U.S. Army private facing court-martial on suspicion of leaking secret documents to the WikiLeaks website testified on Thursday he was confined to a "cage" in the early days after his arrest in 2010, and thought he would die there.

Bradley Manning, in his first public comments since his arrest in Iraq, said his isolation led to a rapid decline in his awareness of his surroundings.

He said that he was initially given little or no information about the charges against him.

"My nights were my days and my days were my nights," Manning said. "It all blended together after a couple of days."

Manning said he was confined to a structure he called a "cage" just eight feet square located inside a tent. He suffered a breakdown about a month after his May 2010 arrest, and guards later found a noose in the cage. Manning had made the noose but failed to recall he had done so because he was so disoriented, he said.

"I remember thinking I'm going to die stuck here in this cage," Manning said. "I thought I was going to die in that cage. That's what I saw - an animal cage."

The private's testimony, which could continue into Friday, came on the third day of a hearing at Fort Meade, Maryland to determine whether his case should proceed to a full court-martial.

Manning has offered to plead guilty to less serious offenses than those with which he has been charged, according to his lawyer.

If Manning's case proceeds to trial and he is convicted of all the security breach charges against him, he could face life imprisonment.

LINKS TO WIKILEAKS

Charges include stealing records belonging to the United States and wrongfully causing them to be published on the Internet and aiding enemies of the United States, identified by prosecutors as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an affiliate of the militant network founded by the late Osama bin Laden.

Prosecutors have alleged that Manning, without authorization, disclosed hundreds of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables, military reports and video of a military helicopter attack in Iraq in which two Reuters journalists were killed.

WikiLeaks has never confirmed that Manning was the source of any documents it released.

In pre-trial litigation, prosecutors have presented testimony that legal experts say could be used to build a case that Manning had been in email contact with Julian Assange, WikiLeaks' Australian-born founder.

Nearly six months ago, Assange, who faces extradition to Sweden from Britain for questioning in a sexual molestation case, took refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

Assange and his supporters have said the Swedish case against him could be part of a secret plot to have him shipped for trial to the United States and either executed or imprisoned at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

U.S. officials have denied those assertions. But they have acknowledged that a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, has been collecting evidence about WikiLeaks and some of its activists. Officials have not ruled out U.S. criminal charges against Assange.

Earlier on Thursday, Assange played down reports that his health was declining after Ecuadorean officials said he was suffering from a chronic lung ailment.

Romney early for lunch, comes bearing no gifts

Mitt Romney arrived at the White House a bit early for his lunch with President Barack Obama, but he wasn?t seen toting any gifts for the president on his way into the building.

Some photographers were at the West Wing when Romney arrived at 12:29 p.m. He was dropped off from a black SUV.

He was empty-handed and wearing a grey suit as he smiled and walked into the facility. The former presidential candidate didn?t speak with the media.

On Wednesday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama didn?t have an agenda for the meeting, but he wanted to discuss with Romney ideas about making government more efficient.

The two men were expected to dine privately, without their aides in the room.

Obama defeated Romney in a bitterly contested presidential election, and Romney later told campaign donors that Obama used ?gifts? to women, students, and minorities to secure his win.

Romney was heavily criticized by Republicans for using the word ?gifts? in characterizing Obama?s social and legislative policies.

Since then, President Obama reached out to Romney for a lunch meeting, which set off a stream of online speculation.

Twitter was having a field day, as users speculated about the lunch time conversation.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter joked on her Twitter account, ?Obama invited Romney for lunch. He ran out of voters for free lunches.?

ABC reporter Jake Tapper also commented that the two foes were debating the merits of decaf coffee.

Politico spoke with one former defeated presidential candidate and an adviser for another about the protocol for such a meeting.

Walter Mondale and a former adviser for John Kerry said the candidates never had sit-down lunches with Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

Obama did have a public meeting in 2008 with John McCain that included a photo op and a joint statement.

The meeting has raised eyebrows because it comes as President Obama and Republicans are engaged in a fierce public battle over the fiscal cliff, a series of steep tax hikes and spending cuts set to start in January.

The White House press office said there was ?some chance? that a photograph would be released after the private lunch.

Saudi king seen on TV amid health questions

(AP) ? Saudi state television has broadcast the first public images of King Abdullah since the 87-year-old monarch underwent what was described as back surgery 11 days ago.

The video shows the king sitting down, as members of the royal family greet him and kiss his hand in a hospital suite in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The Wednesday broadcast appeared aimed at quieting speculation about the overall health of Abdullah, a key U.S. ally in the region. The official Saudi Press Agency says the top-level delegation was "reassured" about Abdullah's recovery.

The king underwent more than 10 hours of surgery Nov. 17 for what officials said was a procedure to secure a loose vertebra.

The king had back operations in 2010 and twice in 2011.

Researchers increase understanding of genetic risk factor for type 1 diabetes

Thursday, November 29, 2012

As part of their ongoing research on the role of genes in the development of type 1 diabetes, Joslin Diabetes Center scientists, in collaboration with scientists at the University of W?rzburg, have demonstrated how a genetic variant associated with type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases influences susceptibility to autoimmunity. The findings appear in the upcoming issue of Diabetes.

Recent studies of the human genome have identified genetic regions associated with autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes. Joslin scientists in the Section of Immunobiology seek to understand how genes that are most widely associated with various autoimmune diseases contribute to disease risk.

One of these genes is PTPN22, which plays a role in lymphocyte (immune cell) function. A PTPN22 variant (or mutation) has been implicated as a risk factor for type 1 diabetes and several other autoimmune disorders. PTPN22 is involved in the formation of a key protein known as lymphoid tyrosine phosphatase (LYP), which helps control the activity of T and B cells in the immune system. The PTPN22 mutation generates a variation of LYP with a different molecular structure.

Most studies of the PTPN22 disease variant have suggested that this variant is a gain-of-function genetic mutation that enhances LYP activity and lessens the activity of T and B cells, which increases susceptibility to autoimmunity. "When immune cells are less reactive during the maturation phase of their development, the cells can evade mechanisms that help protect against autoimmunity," says study lead author Stephan Kissler, PhD, of the Section of Immunobiology. However, one study which analyzed data from humans and genetically modified mice suggested that the LYP variant associated with type 1 diabetes is a loss-of-function mutation that reduces LYP activity.

To help resolve the conflicting data, Joslin scientists conducted studies with a unique mouse model developed by Dr. Kissler's graduate student and co-author, Peilin Zheng. Using a technology that combines RNA interference, a method to silence gene expresson, with lentiviral transgenesis, a method to genetically modify animals, the scientists can manipulate gene activity in the most widely used mouse model for type 1 diabetes, the nonobese diabetic mouse (NOD). In this study, the researchers were able to easily turn off and on the PTPN22 gene in the NOD mouse. "We are the first to use this approach in the NOD mouse model," says Dr. Kissler. "It provides a very powerful way to study the contribution of PTPN22 to disease."

When PTPN22 was turned off in mice, mimicking a loss-of-function mutation, the researchers observed an increase in regulatory T cells and a decreased risk of autoimmune diabetes. "This is the first study conducted on the diabetic mouse model that supports the LYP gain-of-function hypothesis," says Dr. Kissler. "Our work should help to resolve the controversy."

By providing additional data that suggests the potential therapeutic value of PTPN22 manipulation, the study may further the development of new therapeutic options that inhibit LYP to reduce or prevent autoimmunity. "Our goal is to treat autoimmunity. Inhibiting LYP in patients may increase regulatory immune cells and could confer protection against autoimmunity, but it remains to be tested if our promising findings in this mouse model are reflected in humans," says Dr. Kissler.

The Joslin scientists are following up on this study to deepen understanding of how inhibiting PTPN22 affects T and B cells.

Graphene/nanotube hybrid makes single-surface material for energy storage, electronics

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A seamless graphene/nanotube hybrid created at Rice University may be the best electrode interface material possible for many energy storage and electronics applications.

Led by Rice chemist James Tour, researchers have successfully grown forests of carbon nanotubes that rise quickly from sheets of graphene to astounding lengths of up to 120 microns, according to a paper published November 27 by Nature Communications. A house on an average plot with the same aspect ratio would rise into space.

That translates into a massive amount of surface area, the key factor in making things like energy-storing supercapacitors.

The Rice hybrid combines two-dimensional graphene, which is a sheet of carbon one atom thick, and nanotubes into a seamless three-dimensional structure. The bonds between them are covalent, which means adjacent carbon atoms share electrons in a highly stable configuration. The nanotubes aren't merely sitting on the graphene sheet; they become a part of it.

"Many people have tried to attach nanotubes to a metal electrode and it's never gone very well because they get a little electronic barrier right at the interface," Tour said. "By growing graphene on metal (in this case copper) and then growing nanotubes from the graphene, the electrical contact between the nanotubes and the metal electrode is ohmic. That means electrons see no difference, because it's all one seamless material.

"This gives us, effectively, a very high surface area of more than 2,000 square meters per gram of material. It's a huge number," said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science and a co-author with former postdoctoral researcher and lead author Yu Zhu, now an assistant professor at the University of Akron.

Tour said proof of the material's hybrid nature lies in the seven-membered rings at the transition from graphene to nanotube, a structure predicted by theory for such a material and now confirmed through electron microscope images with subnanometer resolution.

Carbon has no peer as a conductive material in such a thin and robust form, especially in the form of graphene or certain types of nanotubes. Combining the two appears to offer great potential for electronic components like fast supercapacitors that, because of the massive surface area, may hold a great deal of energy in a tiny package.

Rice chemist Robert Hauge and his team made the first steps toward such a hybrid over the past decade. Hauge, a distinguished faculty fellow in chemistry at Rice and co-author of the new work, discovered a way to make densely packed carpets of nanotubes on a carbon substrate by suspending catalyst-laced flakes in a furnace. When heated, the catalyst built carbon nanotubes like skyscrapers, starting at the substrate and working their way up. In the process, they lifted the aluminum oxide buffer into the air. The whole thing looked like a kite with many strings and was dubbed an odako, like the giant Japanese kites.

In the new work, the team grew a specialized odako that retained the iron catalyst and aluminum oxide buffer but put them on top of a layer of graphene grown separately on a copper substrate. The copper stayed to serve as an excellent current collector for the three-dimensional hybrids that were grown within minutes to controllable lengths of up to 120 microns.

Electron microscope images showed the one-, two- and three-walled nanotubes firmly embedded in the graphene, and electrical testing showed no resistance to the flow of current at the junction.

"The performance we see in this study is as good as the best carbon-based supercapacitors that have ever been made," Tour said. "We're not really a supercapacitor lab, and still we were able to match the performance because of the quality of the electrode. It's really remarkable, and it all harkens back to that unique interface."

TrackBack - MS Estate Planning

How much can you realistically afford to gift without jeopardizing your own financial security? The question is complex and the right answer might be the wrong answer!

As you may know, current law allows you gift a large sum of $5 million (more than $10 million for married couples) without triggering any gift taxes. Since the law is set to expire at the end of 2012, many are left guessing as to what will happen next year and gearing up for a very ?gifted? 4th Quarter. But as you make plans to take advantage of the gift tax savings, have you carefully considered your own financial needs and goals?

From a tax planning standpoint, there may never be a better time for you to make a large gift. But, you know that life is about more than tax planning. The real question you need to answer, if you are inclined to make substantial gifts, is whether ? and how much ? you can afford to give. Wealth
Strategies Journal
recently published an article, ?How Much Can You Gift,? to help you through the decision process.

Some things to consider:

  • Your personal goals, especially for retirement.
Will they still be adequate after your generous gift?
  • Your age and health. Do you have many more
income-producing years ahead, or is it possible you may need more money to
provide for yourself and your spouse, especially if there are health issues to
    consider.

Consult the cited article for more gifting considerations. For example, you should not gift away ? in any form ? assets that are essential for your own financial needs. You can gift away assets to your children (or trusts for them) that you will never need. And don?t forget about estate planning tools that can help you make gifts that you may need, with ?just in case? access if you do. Seek appropriate legal counsel for more information.

Fox Cities Performing Arts Center financial report

APPLETON - For the third straight year, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center has posted a profit.

For the most recent fiscal year, which ended June 30, the center had a profit of more than $1.7 million.

The PAC started the public phase of its "Keystone Campaign" two weeks ago.? They're hoping to raise $25 million. Already, $17 million has come in.

But even though ticket sales are strong, and donations are increasing, organizers say the numbers can be misleading.

"If someone made a five-year pledge, for example, to the Keystone Campaign, that entire amount that will be paid out over the five years is recorded in this year's financial statement. And then next year as the cash is coming in, it does not show up on the financial statement," said Maria Van Laanen.

PAC officials say the Keystone Campaign will help ensure that the center continues to be part of the community in the long term.

Explosives found under car of prominent Pakistani journalist

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A bomb was found on Monday under the car of a prominent Pakistani journalist who the Taliban had threatened over his coverage of a schoolgirl the militants shot, his employer said.

A half-kilogram (1 lb) of explosives was found under the vehicle of the senior journalist for the Geo News television station, Hamid Mir, while parked at his home in the capital, Islamabad. A bomb disposal squad defused the bomb.

"I was told a few days ago that my name was mentioned in a letter written to the Interior Ministry and in that, there was a threat," Mir told reporters.

The government had offered a reward of 50 million rupees($500,000) for information on those responsible for the bomb, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters.

Pakistan's Taliban had threatened to attack Mir and other journalists for their coverage of their shooting of teenager Malala Yousufzai in October.

Yousufzai has become prominent because of her campaigning in support of education for girls in her home district in northwest Pakistan's Swat Valley.

She is recovering in a hospital in Britain.

Her shooting was the culmination of years of campaigning that had pitted the girl against one of Pakistan's most ruthless Taliban commanders, Maulana Fazlullah.

Fazlullah and his men had taken over the Swat Valley and blown up girls' schools and publicly executed those they deemed immoral. An army offensive in Swat forced many Taliban fighters to flee.

Pakistan is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists, according to press freedom groups.

Model sheds light on chemistry that sparked origin of life

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The question of how life began on a molecular level has been a longstanding problem in science. However, recent mathematical research sheds light on a possible mechanism by which life may have gotten a foothold in the chemical soup that existed on the early Earth.

Researchers have proposed several competing theories for how life on Earth could have gotten its start, even before the first genes or living cells came to be. Despite differences between various proposed scenarios, one theme they all have in common is a network of molecules that have the ability to work together to jumpstart and speed up their own replication -- two necessary ingredients for life. However, many researchers find it hard to imagine how such a molecular network could have formed spontaneously -- with no precursors -- from the chemical environment of early Earth.

"Some say it's equivalent to a tornado blowing through a junkyard and assembling the random pieces of metal and plastic into a Boeing 747," said co-author Wim Hordijk, a visiting scientist at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina, and a participant in an astrobiology meeting held there last year.

In a previous study published in 2004, Hordijk and colleague Mike Steel of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand used a mathematical model of simple chemical reactions to show that such networks might form more easily than many researchers thought. Indeed, biochemists have recently created such networks in the lab.

In a new study published this year, Hordijk, Steel, and colleague Stuart Kauffman of the University of Vermont analyzed the structure of the networks in their mathematical models and found a plausible mechanism by which they could have evolved to produce the building blocks of life we know today, such as cell membranes or nucleic acids.

"It turns out that if you look at the structure of the networks of molecules [in our models], very often they're composed of smaller subsets of molecules with the same self-perpetuating capabilities," Hordijk explained.

By combining, splitting, and recombining to form new types of networks from their own subunits, the models indicate that these subsets of molecules could give rise to increasingly large and complex networks of chemical reactions, and, presumably, life.

"These results could have major consequences for how we think life may have originated from pure chemistry," Hordijk writes.

The study will appear in the December 2012 print issue of the journal Acta Biotheoretica.

Healthy Lifestyle ? A Comprehensive Approach ? Healthy Living ...

?What is this life full of care?

We have no time to stand and stare.?

- William Henry Davies

Reflecting the hectic and complicated nature of present day lifestyles, this quote is a grim reminder of the precedence acquired by material considerations over health and happiness. In our eagerness to earn more, we have neglected the balance between various aspects of life. Research has proved the link between contemporary lifestyles and disorders like obesity, heart and lung diseases, depression, anxiety, mood disorders etc.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as the state of complete physical, psychological, and social well being, not merely the absence of disease. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle is one that leads to such a complete state of well being. Broadly speaking, a healthy lifestyle can be attained by adherence to the following:

Positive Thinking: The mind has great power over the body. The hardest part is making up your mind. If you are determined to adopt a healthy lifestyle ? there is always a way. Develop a positive self image and be yourself. You can do well by not being unduly influenced by what other people say and by being ambitious only to a reasonable degree.
Balanced Diet: A balanced diet contains adequate amounts of nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and fats along with fiber and water. These are essential for efficient operation of the body. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, milk, and meat, should be sufficiently consumed in a balanced manner. Consuming whole grains and salads is particularly beneficial. If you are fond of intoxicating brews, opt for red wine that is an appetizer and aids digestion. Liquor is beneficial only in moderate quantities.

For best results, distribute the food intake throughout the day and progressively decrease it as the day progresses. Include proteins in your diet at the start of the day ? these suppress the feeling of hunger and, thereby, limit the desire for eating junk items between meals.

Herbal nutritional supplements are a natural way of compensating diet imbalances. They also improve immunity, memory, and sleep quality.

Exercise: A thirty minute daily workout keeps the body fit. Priority should be given to cardiovascular / cardio exercises like brisk walking, jogging, aerobics, skipping / jumping rope, swimming, bicycling etc. which increase the heart rate and maintain it for a sustained duration. These exercises improve the heart rate, metabolism, immunity, and hormonal profile. Cardio exercises are different from Pilates that focus on strength building and stretching. Cardio exercises are more effective for burning calories and weight maintenance. Yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises are beneficial for similar reasons.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a reasonable measure of a person?s fitness. It is the mass of the person in kilograms divided by the square of the person?s height measured in meters. A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered normal for an average adult.

Rest and Sleep: Rest and sleep repair the body, reduce stress and mood disorders, improve memory, and keep the heart healthy. Children need around ten hours of sleep, while adults can do with eight hours.

Social Interactions: This is related to the spiritual ? psychological wellness. Interacting with friends and relations transports us away from routine pressures thereby reducing stress. These meetings also produce a sense of belonging improving self esteem. Weekend picnics, holidays, vacations, and playing with pets have the same de-stressing effect.

Healthy and Hygienic Habits: Maintaining a clean, dust free ambience at home and at workspace promotes health. Keeping things organized, so that they are easy to find, brings down stress levels. Personal hygiene reduces the possibility of skin disease and, possibly, allergies. Smoking can be a fatal habit and needs to be given away or, at least, kept in check.

An integrated approach for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle can work wonders for your overall well being. This will not only keep you physically fit but make you happier with a positive attitude.

More baby boomers seek meaningful second careers | WSLS 10

By: VINCENT JACKSON, The Press of Atlantic City | Associated Press

CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) Laurie Johnson owned Oma's Doll Shop in Cape May and volunteered as vice president of the board of directors for Family Promise's Cape May County chapter, a faith-based organization that shelters and rehabilitates homeless families.

Johnson's life changed when she heard the requirements for Family Promise's network director position.

"You are going to look for somebody who can have a baby in one hand (and) be on hold with a foundation in the other. At the same time, you are going to have a toilet plunger right next to your chair," Johnson said she was told about the job requirements.

"I thought, 'That's me.' I knew it. There was no doubt in my mind that that was going to be my career change," she told The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/10S1eg5).

Research from Encore.org, a think tank on baby boomers, work and social purpose, shows as many as 9 million people ages 44 to 70 are in later-in-life second careers that combine personal meaning, continued income and social impact. That's up from an estimated 8.4 million in 2008. Those in encore careers work an estimated 16.7 billion hours each year in education, health care, government and nonprofit organizations, the group says.

The fact that Johnson had a dream job at the doll shop led her to Family Promise. She felt so blessed with her career, husband and two boys, ages 19 and 27, that she wanted to give back in 2009. Johnson lost her doll business two years ago when she couldn't arrange for refinancing.

"I felt like I had the time to volunteer. It just happened to turn into a career," Johnson said. "I was 48 at the time. I don't know what it was, midlife crisis or empty-nest syndrome, but I was just like, 'I've got to give back. Now, it's time to give back.'"

Dawn Kosko, 45, affected people's lives with the various banking jobs that she held in the first part of her working life.

Kosko's jobs included branch manager for the former Collective Bank in Absecon, branch manager for Summit Bank in Somers Point and business lending for PNC Bank in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. She helped make people's dreams come true by approving home mortgages and small-business loans.

The Egg Harbor Township resident was an adjunct professor at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey when somebody brought up to her the idea of teaching high school.

"I was used to teaching adults. I was a little nervous about teaching high school students, but then, I figured, it wasn't really too far off from the people we used to hire as tellers that maybe just graduated high school. If it was juniors and seniors, it probably would be a lot of fun," said Kosko, who teaches a financial literacy class at Absegami High School in Galloway Township.

Gina McNeal, 44, of Cape May, spent six years helping people as a front-office manager at a hotel in Washington, D.C. She spent a year working at a hotel when she returned to South Jersey, but the job's hours were not conducive to raising a family.

"I have two kids, (ages) 10 and 12. As soon as they started kindergarten and first grade ... I sat at the kitchen table and said, 'What am I going to do with the rest of my life?' I pulled out an ACCC (Atlantic Cape Community College) course catalog, and I said, 'What's going to be a pretty decent salary with a flexible schedule?' and I opened up the book to nursing, and within probably 15 minutes, I was down at the ACCC office," said McNeal, who is a registered nurse at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House.

It's not all smooth sailing when people make middle-age career switches. Johnson contemplated quitting her job at Family Promise after three months.

One night, she started crying and yelling at God after work.

"You have to get me out of this, replace me somehow, get me out of this, or you're going to have to show me I'm right where I'm supposed to be now, and things are going to get better, and I'm going to be able to do this, and I want an answer now," she recalls praying.

The sign Johnson was looking for came the next day at work.

Johnson was on the phone with Walmart to find out what it needed to give Family Promise $1,000. A 2-year-old sat in her lap, started playing with her hair and began singing "I Love You, You Love Me," a song from the TV show, "Barney & Friends." Just then, the child's brother yelled from the bathroom, "Miss Laurie, the toilet is clogged."

"I was like, 'There we go. There it was, baby on lap, talking to a foundation and the toilet is clogged,'" Johnson said.

Suzanne Smigo, board president for Family Promise of Cape May County, said Johnson brought the business skills she'd honed running the doll shop to her job as the network director of Family Promise, particularly her organization prowess. Johnson and Kathleen O'Neill, the family advocate, have built a strong team and complement each other, Smigo said.

"They are both very dedicated," Smigo said.

Kosko said she felt like she was helping people in the banking business, but she still left in 2003. She started thinking about it two years earlier, after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"It was just such an overwhelming experience ... You never know when you are walking out the door if you are coming back or not, so maybe I want to do something else. Do I want to stay in the bank my entire life, or do I want to do something that I would perceive as being more meaningful or helping more people?" Kosko said.

When Kosko worked in banking, she met people who wanted loans but had poor credit histories due to bad choices they made earlier in life. As a high school teacher of financial literacy, she felt she could help people avoid making money mistakes.

"They come back into school to visit after they graduate, and they tell me, 'I'm using all this information that you taught me. I kept all the information, and we are using almost everything in my Intro to Business class at Rutgers,' or I've had another student come back and say, 'You got me a job,'" said Kosko, whose teaching salary the past 10 years is about one-third of what she was paid in banking.

Brenda Callaghan, Absegami's supervisor of math and business, said it is to Kosko's advantage that she used to be in banking.

"You can bring that street credibility into the classroom. You can articulate how things really appear out there. You can bring insight that some people who go through a traditional education program can't always bring to the table," Callaghan said.

McNeal loved working in the hotel industry, but it was time-consuming. She found she also loves being a nurse.

"It's really nice to see your patient improve and get better," McNeal said of the best thing about being a nurse for the past 4 1/2 years. "When I leave here today, I know what I accomplished."

McNeal's supervisor, Karen Watson, director of the 4 East Medical Surgical Unit at Cape Regional Medical Center, knew McNeal used to work in the hotel business. She said McNeal is excellent at her job, works well with all the other team members at the hospital, cares about her patients and is patient-focused.

"In so many jobs now, you have to have good customer service skills, and I think that has been positive for her changing to a R.N. She's comfortable around people. I absolutely think that would have been a benefit," Watson said of McNeal.

Mass. natural gas explosion damaged 42 buildings

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? Preliminary investigations show more than 40 buildings were damaged in a natural gas explosion in Massachusetts that injured 18 people, building inspectors said Saturday.

A strip club was flattened and a day care center was heavily damaged in the massive explosion Friday night in Springfield, one of New England's biggest cities.

No one was killed in the explosion.

Investigators were trying Saturday to figure out what caused the blast that could be heard for miles, left a large hole in the ground where the multistory brick building housing Scores Gentleman's Club once stood and scattered debris over several blocks.

Officials already had evacuated part of the entertainment district after responding to a gas leak and odor reported about an hour before the explosion. Gas workers venting a gas leak got indications that the building was about to explode and they ducked for cover behind a utility truck ? along with firefighters and police officers ? just before the blast, said Mark McDonald, president of the New England Gas Workers Association.

Most of the injured were in that group, and the truck that saved their lives was essentially demolished, he said.

"It really is a miracle and it's an example of our public safety officials, each and every day, putting themselves in harm's way, taking what could have been considered a very routine call of an odor of gas, but they took the proper precautions," State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said. "And thanks to God that they did."

Officials also marveled how the 5:30 p.m. blast occurred when a day care center next door was closed. The center's building was heavily damaged.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno were attending a tree-lighting ceremony when the explosion occurred. Sarno said some people mistakenly thought the boom was part of the holiday event.

The explosion blew out windows in a three-block radius, leaving at least three buildings irreparably damaged and causing emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling, police said. Pieces of broken glass littered streets and sidewalks. It was unclear how many residents had been evacuated. A shelter was set up at a school, but city officials said no one stayed there overnight.

Omar Fermin, manager of the Punta Cana Restaurant two blocks from the explosion site, found the floor-to-ceiling windows blasted out when he came to check on the property Saturday morning.

"It looks like an earthquake hit," said Fermin, a native of the Dominican Republic. "I've never seen anything like it."

He said he was waiting for someone to come and assess the damage. He worried the restaurant would remain closed for weeks while the owner seeks to replace the massive custom-made windows.

Authorities cordoned off the center of the explosion Saturday as building inspectors worked to identify unsafe structures. Anxious residents gathered at the perimeter, waiting for permission to visit their buildings.

Preliminary reports show the blast damaged 42 buildings housing 115 residential units, said Thomas Walsh, spokesman for Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Three buildings were immediately condemned, and 24 others require additional inspections by structural engineers to determine whether they are safe, Walsh said.

Dogs trapped in abandoned buildings barked loudly Saturday as building inspectors fanned out across the area. One inspector said he wished he could get a ladder and permission to retrieve a dog that was barking in the upper floor of one building sealed off from residents.

Authorities are opening an animal shelter for pets affected by the explosion, Walsh said.

Coan, the fire marshal, said his office is investigating the cause of the blast and its possible origin. The state's Department of Public Utilities was also investigating.

Sheila Doiron, a spokeswoman for Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, said the company will continue to monitor for any potential leaks within several blocks of the blast site. So far, she said, the company hadn't yet found any measurable readings.

The utility will keep at least 30 workers at the scene, along with a so-called sniffing car mounted with sophisticated gadgets capable of detecting low levels of gas leaks, Walsh said.

Doiron said the company also didn't find in its records any gas odor calls to the area where the strip club was located.

Authorities also deployed police officers throughout the area to prevent looting, Walsh said.

The victims were taken to two hospitals in the city. Those injured were nine firefighters, two police officers, four Columbia Gas workers, two civilians and another city employee.

Springfield, which is 90 miles west of Boston and has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not near the blast site.

The city has been rebuilding from damage caused by a tornado in June 2011.

Wayne Davis, who lives about a block from the destroyed building, said he felt his apartment shake.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard in several neighboring communities. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.
