Each month, the New York Legal Hacker Meetup tackles one area where law has failed to keep up with technology. With a distinguished panel that will lay out the issue, we throw it open to our audience to ask questions and present their own solutions that will help law and policy adapt to a constantly changing world.
This month going to?look at the patent system and the issue of non-practicing entities (or patent trolls). We?ll dig into the architecture of the current patent system, and how it encourages this behavior. Then we?ll look at how we define trolling,?explore the problems they may create, and discuss what kinds of patents they?re using.?Finally, we?ll look at practical solutions that tackle the problem and protect innovation.
As usual, our first hour will be a panel discussion with a host of amazing experts in the field. Our second hour will be a ?mini-hackathon? followed by quick demos and networking.
Finally, we?ll look at practical solutions that tackle the problems we?ve raised, and determine for ourselves whether our current system and the solutions we propose ?promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.?
