(AP) ? New York City's fast-paced technology scene, known as Silicon Alley, tried not to lose a step after Hurricane Sandy knocked out power lines, devastated the public transit system and left portions of the city flooded.

On Tuesday, companies from small startups to major players such as Google and Facebook, scrambled to balance employee safety with attempts to conduct business as usual. With laptops, smartphones and a dash of ingenuity tech companies powered through the adverse conditions? or at least tried to.

Silicon Alley is a booming part of New York City's economy. It is both a location ? many technology startups are housed in the lower part of Manhattan? and a state of mind, since many companies have now sprouted across the East River in Brooklyn and elsewhere.

Like many New Yorkers, scads of technology workers toiled from home or hunkered down with coworkers who still had electricity. That was certainly the case among employees of trendy e-commerce site Fab.com on Tuesday. Fab's headquarters is located in the West Village, which was flooded and without power. At 6 a.m. on Tuesday, the company's 225 or so New York-based employees received an email titled "team together." The message asked whether people with electric power might open their homes to co-workers who were without power. In a few hours, 114 people responded.

By noon, there were 12 people working out of CEO Jason Goldberg's two-bedroom apartment on 42nd Street. Other workers gathered in apartments in Manhattan's midtown Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, in Brooklyn and other parts of the city. Two people, who'd flown in from Germany and India before the storm hit in some unfortunate timing also joined Goldberg after they were evacuated from their hotel rooms.

"No one wants to be sitting around doing nothing," Goldberg said in a telephone interview from his apartment, where his dog barked in the background as more employees arrived. "Everyone wants to keep things going."

Some 20 Fab.com employees planned to host co-workers in their homes overnight on Tuesday.

Google Inc. closed its sprawling New York City offices, located on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th streets in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. The company, which is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., has about 2,000 employees in its New York office. Google said the safety of its employees is its focus. The office will be closed until further notice, the company said.

The online search leader bought the 15-story, 2.9-million-square-foot building ?which has more space than the Empire State Building ? in 2010. In addition to housing its own offices, Google leases out much of the space, hosting many data centers. Data centers house other companies' servers, which store the vast amounts of data found on websites.

Google did not say whether the building had power as of Tuesday afternoon.

One data center flooded in Sandy's wake knocked popular New York blogs, including Gawker.com, off the Internet. The gossip and media blog, and other Gawker Media sites, responded by creating alternate websites where readers could get the latest information, whether they wanted to read about Sandy or the Octomom.

"Our New York City data center is still offline thanks to Hurricane Sandy. We are working as quickly as possible to restore the full site, but in the interim you can view updates at http://updates.gawker.com," read a message on Gawker.com on Tuesday afternoon.

Facebook's office on Madison Avenue was officially closed, with most of the 200 or so New York-based employees working from home. Though the office had power, getting to work would have been a daunting task for car-free city dwellers, and New York's subway system was still shut down.

For Quirky.com, whose users collaborate in designing household products and accessories, Superstorm Sandy left a flooded basement and the loss of power. Though they work on the seventh floor, for now, the site's 70 employees are working from home until power is restored, said spokeswoman Jaime Yandolino in an email.

Brooklyn-based MakerBot, a 3D printing company, was closed on Tuesday, but workers logged in from home. CEO Bre Pettis said the office had power and Internet access. The office will be open Wednesday.

"We were prepared for the worst and luckily came out with the best," Pettis said in a telephone interview from home, as his baby cried in the background.

The Importance of Food and Drink ? [ sequoya review ]

It is 11:23 on a Thursday morning and a large plate of pumpkin spice chocolate chip oatmeal cookies are basking in the sunlight that has been strolling through my open kitchen window. I have a bushel of apples waiting to be sliced and diced for some apple cider pies, and warm baguettes waiting to be slathered with honey goat cheese and pumpkin butter. There are pumpkins to be carved and seeds to be roasted and toasted with cinnamon, salt, and oregano. It is a morning perfect for getting lost in the world of literature, for feeling the fall breeze dance into the room and help stir my pen.

This is the season that begins months of a holiday love affair with food and drink. Take a look at any writer: I am sure most all will be able to sit and describe for hours their favorite food and drinks. For anyone wanting to dive into some of the favorite dishes and drinks the top literary authors and poets have mentioned in letters, books, or interviews, you have to check out the blog Paper and Salt. With cherished recipes including Agatha Christie?s Fig and Orange Scones with Devonshire Cream, Robert Penn Warren?s favorite cocktail recipe, and even Wallace Stevens? Coconut Caramel Graham Cookies, the blog won?t let you down. Let?s zoom in on Stevens for a minute, whose ?humdrum evening routine consisted of eating a cookie while reading the paper.? To all of us with a sweet tooth, Stevens is a dear kindred spirit. Nicole from Paper and Salt writes:

On his doctor?s orders, Stevens repeatedly tried to cut his dessert intake, but when a friend sent him a bottle of coconut syrup that reminded him of his beloved caramels, it all went out the window. ?God help me, I am a?miserable?sinner,? he wrote, ?and love being so.?

I am sure there are many jokes out there about ?drink? being the true ?ink? in a writer?s pen, but it is necessary to stop and reflect on various drinks for a minute. For writers in general?but poets especially?there is nothing more stimulating than good conversation accompanied by wine paired with the right cheese. See The Wine and Cheese Pairing Guide at Winemonger?for suggestions.

And last but not least, what about those of you who love actually entering into the literary world and experiencing their own food and drink? For those of you who want a nice warm butterbeer on a cool fall evening without having to migrate to Orlando for the world of Harry Potter? I recommend including Guinness in your recipe, because what?s the magic in making butterbeer if you don?t tweak it to your own taste? Add a little Buttescotch Schnapps and research your own recipe! Seriously. Make your own magic, folks. (Except for the under-21s, only cream soda and butterscotch syrup for you!)

Or perhaps you want a fresh drink, something for a picnic, don?t forget to look up Anne (with an E)?s recipe for Raspberry Cordial. If you?re feeling extra silly, you can even re-enact dear Diana?s encounter with the ?Raspberry Cordial.? Or just drink some currant wine yourself.

So writers, readers, lovers of food and drink: dive into the culinary world. The world of scents and flavors. Savor the spices, the aromas, the textures. Nerd out with your favorite literary recipes. Research what your favorite authors liked to eat and drink. Don?t forget to check out the Paper and Salt blog, and plunge into the best part of writing: eating and drinking.

Romney Inches Ahead in New Ohio Poll; Weekend Polls Show Obama in the Lead

Polls released since Friday show a mixed bag of results, with both President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney able to claim the lead in Ohio. With only one week left before Election Day, Obama won many of the weekend polls, but Romney inched ahead in more than just Ohio. The race is as unsettled as it's been all month, and with Hurricane Sandy barreling down on the Mid-Atlantic coast, more chaos is in store.

Ohio

President Obama won two out of four polls released since Sunday, and tied in a third. Rasmussen's latest poll of 750 likely voters, released Monday, found Romney ahead by two points, 50-48 percent. The margin of error was 4 percent. An Ohio News poll, released Sunday but taken almost one week ago, found the race tied at 49 percent. The poll surveyed 1,015 likely voters with a 3.1 percent margin of error. A Gravis Marketing poll of 730 likely voters gave Obama a one-point lead over Romney, 50-49 percent. The poll's margin of error was 3.6 percent. And a Public Policy Polling poll found Obama ahead by four, 51-47 percent. The poll of 718 likely voters had a margin of error of 3.7 percent. Obama has maintained a small but consistent lead in Ohio in October, trailing Romney in only four polls all month.

Colorado

The latest American Research Group poll of Colorado put Romney back into the lead. In a poll of 600 likely voters, Romney led by one point, 48-47 percent. The poll had a 4 percent margin of error. Colorado has been close for most of the month, with Romney winning seven polls, Obama winning six and one poll showing them tied.

Florida

A new CNN poll of Florida found Romney ahead of Obama. A poll of 770 likely voters preferred Romney by one percent, 50-49 percent. The poll's margin of error was 3.5 percent. Similarly to Ohio, Florida has been leaning one way most of the month, in this case towards Romney. Romney has had a small but reliable lead in October, winning all but four polls this month. But one of those losses came this weekend. A Public Policy Polling poll released Sunday had Obama ahead by one, 49-48 percent. The poll of 687 likely voters had a 3.7 percent margin of error.

National Polls

Five new national polls show Romney continues to run well nationally, but the race is definitely tightening. A Pew Research poll of 1,495 likely voters found the two candidates tied at 47 percent. Both of the major national tracking polls still show Romney ahead. The Gallup Seven Day Tracking Poll gave Romney a five point advantage, 51-46 percent, but the Rasmussen Three Day Tracking Poll found Romney with only a two point edge, 49-47 percent. A Politico poll found Obama ahead by one point, 49-48 percent, while a Washington Post/ABC News poll found Romney ahead by the same result.

Lithuania president vetoes coalition in vote fraud row

VILNIUS (Reuters) - Lithuania's president on Monday vetoed a proposed coalition government, saying one of the three parties involved stood accused of serious voter fraud in a weekend election and was therefore unfit to govern.

President Dalia Grybauskaite's surprise intervention cast a cloud of uncertainty over the aftermath of the election - which turned into a vote against austerity - setting up a possible standoff or new talks on forming a different government.

The party accused of fraud, the Labor Party, strongly denies wrongdoing. "The principle of the presumption of innocence must be kept to," said Viktor Uspaskich, the party's leader. "The will of the people must not be spat upon".

The election put centre-left parties promising to ease the impact of austerity in pole position to form a new coalition, but the president's gambit gave Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius an opening to stay in power or have a role in a new coalition.

The opposition Social Democratic Party, the Labor Party and the party of an impeached former president held a meeting in the early hours of Monday to discuss a coalition.

But Grybauskaite said she refused to back a coalition which included Labor, which stands accused of buying votes during the two rounds of voting.

"A party which is suspected of gross violations in the election, which is suspected of false accounting and non-transparent activities cannot participate in the government's formation," the president told reporters.

Grybauskaite, 56, a former European Union budget commissioner, is popular with voters. Under the constitution she has the power to nominate the country's prime minister.

She said police were investigating 27 election irregularities, 18 of which concerned alleged vote buying, with the Labor Party accused of involvement in most of them.

Separately, Uspaskich, is also on trial for alleged tax fraud at his party from 2004-2006, something he denies. The party increased its seats in parliament to 29 from 10.

"We call our state a democratic state, ruled by law," Uspaskich said on public television.

Grybauskaite said she would eventually probably name Social Democrat Party leader Algirdas Butkevicius as prime minister.

After morning meetings, political parties retired to discuss a way forward. No talks were planned between Butkevicius and Kubilius. Kubilius has said the ball is in Butkevicius's court.

EURO?

Butkevicius, a former finance minister, told reporters he could not say whether Labor would be in government or not.

Kubilius won praise abroad for slashing Lithuania's budget deficit after a brutal economic crisis began four years ago.

The economy has now returned to growth, and rose a faster-than-expected 4.4 percent in the third quarter.

But the outgoing premier saw his popularity slide at home as wages fell, unemployment rose and tens of thousands of people left the small Baltic country in search of work.

Butkevicus has said he would stick to fiscal responsibility and aim to take Lithuania into the euro zone in 2015.

Economists said he would have little choice but to keep a tight rein on spending as Lithuania remained highly indebted and needed to maintain the trust of financial markets.

Butkevicius has also backed better ties with Russia.

Analysts said Grybauskaite's gambit could result in a rainbow coalition between the Social Democrats and Kubilius or the formation of a minority government.

"I am very surprised," said political scientist Kestutis Girnius of the president's move. He said a rainbow coalition would be strong in parliament, but a bitter pill for Butkevicius, whose party won the election with 38 seats.

"They would be a junior member of the coalition," he said, referring to the fact that Kubilius and an allied liberal party would be able to out-vote the Social Democrats in such a coalition.

Political commentator Arturas Racas said Butkevicius had three choices - to defy the president and risk confrontation, to go for a minority government that would seek support in parliament from the center-right or form a coalition with the conservatives.

"It all depends on how strong Butkevicius is," he said.

The Best Pick 3 Lottery Software

Aspiring for the highest possibility of winning Pick 3 lottery game is one of the challenges and adventures sought after by many. Although the game is easily on nature while the chances of bagging the winning combination is quite higher compared to other lottery games, still, by mere reliance on luck does not bring you somewhere. It is by treating this simple game as a mathematical game where certain formulas are needed to be solved to eventually get the much prized winning is where the adventure and fun starts.

But this approach can tire one as time goes since manual calculations can bring aberrations like wrong solution of the numbers due to outside factors like the environment, one's condition and mood, whatever it is, the thing that is emphasized here is that as manual calculation is good, having Pick 3 lottery software is much better.

Choosing the best Pick 3 lottery software is quite tedious job partly because there are plenty of software programs in the web which promise all but the same guarantee that theirs is a software that assures the highest rate of chance in winning Pick 3 lottery game, and partly because you need to first evaluate what it is the best strategy that works best in winning.

The best Pick 3 lottery software is a program which features the most tested technique yielding a high rate of winning outcomes used and proven by many people. One way of knowing what particular software is the best, you can discuss it with your friends or converse with people whom you have known to have won constantly, however you should be discreet with your little investigation tactics as some detest the idea of sharing their secret. Or, if this is not so helpful, you can take time in browsing the internet. There are a lot of software programs for Pick 3 lottery game that you will be confused what is indeed the best. The secret in discovering the best possible software is by listing down all of these software applications and filter the ones with trial version. Test each one out. Make comparisons and jot down your impressions and findings of the same. From this, you then can purchase the one which gave you the highest probability of winning in a number of consecutive attempts. This may take time, but by investing some efforts on this endeavor, you will surely be able to find which the best is.

Another hint is if that software gives you a calculated number combination by showing you how it was done basing on a given formula. If the software only produces a random set of numbers labeling them to be the winning combinations for the next draw, then get rid of it.

The fundamental secret to winning Pick 3 is by using a lottery software that works to predict the right numbers, and that can only be achieved when you subscribe to the best Pick 3 lottery software by following the guidelines given above.

Build a Hidden Outdoor PVC Key Holder

Build a Hidden Outdoor PVC Key HolderMany people like to stash a hidden key to their house or workshop in a fake rock, under a potted plant, or in various other areas. Another good method is to build a small PVC pipe with cap and coupler?it's a waterproof storage area that will look like a standard access point to clean out your drain.

PVC project weblog PVC Workshop suggests using a 4-inch long piece of 1-1/4-inch pipe with a threaded cap and couplers to mimic the appearance of an access point. Just assemble the pipe, add your keys, and bury it a few inches in the soil. Alternatively you can just bury the entire PVC pipe but you'll have to remember where it is and have a way of digging it up should you need the key.

Indiana hoping to match hype of being No. 1

(AP) ? Jordan Hulls walks into Assembly Hall wearing a T-shirt that reads "How Sweet It Is," a phrase intended to celebrate Indiana's return to the NCAA tournament regional semifinals last spring.

This fall, those words have a whole new meaning.

After spending three years in the abyss and another year trying to prove themselves, the Hoosiers are ranked No. 1 and squarely in the discussion about the national championship.

Indiana is back. Finally.

"It could be a really special year and everybody is anxious to start seeing what this team is capable of," junior guard Victor Oladipo said with his usual exuberance. "It's the stuff you dream about, trying to chase this one goal that everyone is trying to chase."

Outsiders certainly believe Indiana has the combination to do that this season.

For the first time since 1979-80, and only the third time in school history, the Hoosiers open this season ranked No. 1. Sophomore center Cody Zeller is the early favorite to be the Big Ten player of the year, and the campaigning to make him this year's national player of the year is in full swing, too. Indiana basketball tickets are again one of the hottest items in the state.

Don't believe it?

Eager fans are so excited about this season they filled every seat inside Assembly Hall for an open practice Oct. 20 two hours before it began. Coach Tom Crean apologized to those who were turned away.

"It makes you appreciate winning that much more," said Hulls, a senior guard and one of the team leaders. "But it is kind of crazy to think about how far we've come."

Crean was hired in April 2008 to clean things up after an embarrassing NCAA phone-call scandal tainted the school's pristine image and gutted the roster. He promised to restore the program's image, its national prestige and to win championships with a team that would make everyone proud.

Nobody expected the long road back to be easy, least of all Crean, who had only two returning players, both walk-ons, in that first season.

Crean remembers it well. Indiana crashed to 6-25, losing to the likes of Lipscomb and barely avoided losing to Division II school Chaminade in the seventh-place game at the Maui Invitational. It was ugly.

"We had no leadership that year," Crean said. "You look around pro and college sports, you take the leader out of a business and the business will be affected. Now you take the leadership out of a program, and the players don't have anyone to look up to, nobody who's been through that. We had to grow into that. We could have signed junior college kids, but it wouldn't have made any difference because they hadn't been through Indiana and neither had we."

While Hulls was busy winning the state's 2009 Mr. Basketball Award, he watched disbelievingly as his hometown school tumbled.

When Crean offered him a chance to be part of the solution, Hulls couldn't pass it up.

Crean gave the same sales pitch same everywhere he went: Come to Indiana and you'll get playing time right away, maybe start, become part of something bigger than themselves, earn a degree from a highly-respected institution and forever be known in Hoosiers lore as part of the group that rebuilt Indiana basketball.

"I remember the dark days, and now I see the guys being picked high. The program is back," said shooting guard Maurice Creek, who came to Indiana to help restore the basketball program before three season-ending injuries derailed his career. "We have more pieces than when I first got here."

The struggles continued through Crean's next two seasons as Indiana went 10-21 and 12-20. Doubters began to wonder how long all this would take.

The Hoosiers answered that challenge with a magical 2011-12. Indiana won 15 more games, finishing 27-9 and making their first NCAA tourney under Crean. But it wasn't just the Hoosiers record that got national attention.

On Dec. 10, Christian Watford hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat No. 1 Kentucky 73-72. Three weeks later, the Hoosiers upset then No. 2 Ohio State 74-70. In February, as No. 5 Michigan State closed in on a Big Ten title, the Hoosiers did it again, soundly beating the Spartans 70-55.

It marked the first time in school history that Indiana had beaten three top-five teams in the same season, and the first time in Crean's tenure that the Hoosiers became a ranked team. The only real glitch came in the March rematch with Kentucky, won by the eventual national champs 102-90 ? a loss the Hoosiers are now using as motivation.

"It probably always lingers because you never want to lose a game," Hulls said. "You hate the feeling of a loss, and we don't want to get back to that point and lose again."

Zeller, who averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds last season, has grown about one-half inch to an even 7-feet, has added 10 to 15 pounds of muscle and feels stronger and better than he did a year ago. He is also ready to start shooting 3-pointers.

"I worked on it a lot this summer," he said after Hoosier Hysteria. "I shot 3s in high school, but I know I'll have to shoot some from outside this year."

Watford (12.6 points), Hulls (11.7 points) and Oladipo (10.8) also are back.

What else does Indiana have? Depth and one of the nation's top freshmen classes.

Backup Will Sheehey (8.6) and sophomores Remy Abell and Austin Etherington could all have expanded roles this year. New point guard Yogi Ferrell and two 6-foot-8 forwards, Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Jeremy Hollowell, all freshmen, could both see significant playing time, too, especially with forward Derek Elston expected to miss six to eight weeks with a torn meniscus.

But Crean has another advantage other national contenders don't. His team has enough players still around from those losing seasons to remind players to ignore the chatter and just work toward getting their sweetest finish of all ? a sixth national championship banner.

"I'm not even going to try to downplay that it's not a big deal. It's not a 'hey, we told you so.' It's none of that. We lived it. And I think it's a great testament to everybody that's been a part of that program with sticking with it and moving onward and upward," Crean said. "It's an incredible program. It's an incredible school. We need people that are going to come in and leave it in a better place than they found it. That's exactly what our players are trying to do."

@SeventhGen Cleaning Products Review + How to Make a Tissue ...

When you have kids, sometimes it seems like all you do is clean. While we love our little tornadoes of destruction dearly, most of them during their younger years do truly leave a mess behind faster than we can pick it up. That combined with normal household cleaning, and everything else a parent does, means a mom?s work is never done.
Not only do I clean a lot more since having kids, I also have become more conscious about what we use for cleaning. Some of the store bought products out there have some pretty scary ingredients that are not only bad for my family, but bad for the environment as well. I?ve been watching labels on what we use and making some switches and one of the new brands we?ve recently been trying out is Seventh Generation.

?

A leading brand of household and personal care products that help protect human health and the environment, Seventh Generation was established in 1988 in Burlington, Vermont. Today it remains an independent, privately-held business distributing products to natural food stores, supermarkets, mass merchants, and online retailers across the United States and Canada.
Offering a full line of paper products, cleaning products, health and beauty products, baby care and laundry care, Seventh Generation offers a full line of environmentally friendly options for families on a budget. While I had purchased and used Seventh Generation products in the past, I didn?t realize how many different product options that they had available for the whole family from laundry soap, to cleaning supplies, to diapers and more.

?

We were recently sent a selection of Seventh Generation products, hand soaps and tissues to try out and it was a great reminder on why I really like this line up for my family. With natural ingredients, it makes me feel better using these products in my home where my kids play. I also love supporting a company that has such strong missions that they support.
With cold and flu season here, I?ve been really trying to keep everything very clean and germ free to keep sickness at bay, and while I loved all the Seventh Generation products we tried out, our favorites were the hand soaps. Easy on the skin with a nice gentle scent, we?ve been using them often lately as my little man is potty training and we have to go to the bathroom and wash our hands what feels like hundreds of times a day.
For more information on Seventh Generation product visit?www.seventhgeneration.com?and look for them at retailers everywhere. Watch for our Seventh Generation Giveaway coming soon and be sure to check out this video of how to make a super cute tissue box monster!

In wake of Sandusky scandal, Penn State holds child sex abuse conference

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Pennsylvania State University, which was shaken by a molestation scandal that put former coach Jerry Sandusky in prison and tarnished its famed football program, holds a three-day conference starting this weekend aimed at preventing child abuse.

The conference features child sex abuse survivors Sugar Ray Leonard, a former world boxing champion, and Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in 2002 and held captive for nine months.

Starting on Sunday, it comes just weeks after Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for molesting 10 boys over more than a decade.

An independent commission by former FBI chief Louis Freeh concluded that university officials were alerted to Sandusky's abuse, did nothing to stop it and decided against reporting it to authorities.

In a rebuke to the school's failure to stop Sandusky's abuse, the NCAA, the governing body of U.S. college sports, fined Penn State $60 million and voided 14 seasons of football victories.

Longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was fired during the scandal, on grounds he too failed to stop Sandusky. Paterno died in January of lung cancer.

Dr. Kate Staley, a member of Penn State's Justice Center for Research and lead organizer of the conference, said the event was not meant to be an attempt by the university to restore its name.

"The last thing I would have done is put on a PR stunt," Staley said.

She said the conference was intended to be "substantive and educational and awareness-raising."

Attendees from 27 states include police officers, preschool teachers and child sex abuse experts as well as people who may not deal with the issue on a regular basis.

Staley said the topic made people very uncomfortable and reluctant to talk about it.

"One of the things this conference is trying to do is end that silence," she said.

Another speaker at the event is swimmer Margaret Hoelzer, a two-time Olympian who won two silver medals and a bronze in 2008. She was the victim of abuse by a friend's father when she was 5 years old.

"This is certainly not something that anyone needs to go through alone," Hoelzer said. "Keep talking and keep talking until you find someone that believes you."

She added that victims could become victors, "whether that's as a CEO or an Olympian or in a happy relationship."

"You can be successful. Horrible things happen in life, but you can overcome them and be successful," Hoelzer said.

Greek magazine publisher faces charges

(AP) ? Police have arrested the publisher of a magazine that printed what is it says is a list of more than 2,000 Greek depositors at an HSBC bank in Switzerland.

Costas Vaxevanis, the publisher of Hot Doc magazine, will face a court hearing Monday, charged with the misdemeanor of violating laws regarding personal data, police said.

On Saturday, he published what he claims is a list given to the Greek government by French officials in 2010.

Information on 24,000 HSBC customers with Swiss accounts were stolen that year, the British bank has said, potentially exposing many international clients to prosecution by tax authorities, if they failed to declare the assets in their home countries. The bank said a former IT employee with HSBC, identified by French authorities, had obtained the information.

'Enchanted' figurine likely Spain's oldest

It's missing a head and some limbs, but an "enchanted" ceramic idol recently unearthed near Barcelona is thought to be the most ancient human figurine ever found in Spain, archaeologists say.

The 3-inch (8-centimeter)-long pottery fragment was uncovered over the summer during excavations at Can Sadurn? cave in Begues, Barcelona province ? a site perhaps best known for the discovery of the oldest evidence of beer-drinking in Europe. Researchers say the statuette is 6,500 years old, making it the most ancient human figurine from Catalonia, as well as the whole Iberian Peninsula.

The majority of Neolithic idols found in the Mediterranean are female, but the lack of breasts on the torso suggests this figurine is male, the researchers said. Holes in the arms indicate it was strung up with a cord or a leather strap to be used as a necklace or to decorate a cave home.

The figure is thought to have had some religious or spiritual importance, and "all its characteristics point towards what, in prehistory, can be defined as an idol," read a statement about the discovery from the University of Barcelona.

Because of its possibly magical significance and the fact that Begues residents are sometimes given the Catalan nickname "Els Encantats" ("The Enchanted"), archaeologists have called the figurine "El Encantat de Begues."

The lower limbs seem to be attached to the torso at an angle, suggesting, the researchers believe, that when the figurine was whole it would have been in a sitting position or would have had its legs bent. From what's left of its arms, the archaeologists believe its upper limbs were outstretched. The team also speculates that the figure's head would have been mobile and interchangeable, fitting into the neck-hole like a puzzle piece.

The dig at Can Sadurn? is led by researchers from the University of Barcelona and the organization CIPAG (Collectiu per la Investigaci? de la Prehist?ria i l'Arqueologia del Garraf-Ordal). The team hopes further excavations at the site will turn up other fragments of the figurine.

First Person: During Breast Cancer Treatment, Lucky to Have My Husband by My Side

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Yahoo News asked women who have had breast cancer or are going through treatment to write about the people in their lives who stood by them and cared for them. Here's one story.

FIRST PERSON | It's been two decades since my breast cancer diagnosis. Through it all, my husband was my companion: during my surgery, treatments and after.

Today, we're both 86, and living in Los Angeles. We've known each other for 45 years after we met on a blind date and fell in love the first day we met.

When I discovered I had breast cancer in my 60s, I considered myself lucky. Why? Because I discovered it when it was in the very first stage. I knew it was in the first stage because when I went in for my annual mammogram, there were no signs of cancer.

Two months later, I felt a small lump in my left breast, which I had never felt before. To make certain that my imagination wasn't getting the best of me, I asked my husband to feel my breast. When he told me that he did feel a lump, I became upset. He re-assured me that it was probably nothing to worry about. It made me feel a little better.

Although I went for my second mammogram only two months after the first one, I was disturbed when the nurse reported to me that I had cancer in the left breast. I made an appointment for surgery. My husband was a great companion. As he drove me to the hospital, he was very re-assuring that everything will be alright. This made me feel so much better.

Since my cancer was in the very early stage, I did not need chemotherapy, but I had to go for radiation therapy three times a week for six weeks.

Being a social person, I found my radiation sessions rather pleasant and relaxing. Why? Because while waiting in the waiting room for my treatments, there were other people waiting for their treatments also. When you sit in a room three times a week for six weeks, with basically the same people, you're bound to become friendly with some of the people.

One young man had brain cancer. Apparently, his wife left him because she couldn't take it. When I heard this, I felt so that my husband was definitely not like this man's wife.

Even though the pain from the operation was not too severe, he insisted on making dinner for the next three days after he brought me home from the hospital. Not only did he make the dinner, but when I told him that I would clean up, he insisted: "No, no. You go watch television. "

After he cleaned up, he held my hand, and whispered in my ear, "You're my only."
