Electronista - Lava to launch Intel-powered Android phone in India - Electronista

Phone expected as early as April

Intel has reportedly teamed with Lava to create a new series of smartphones based on Medfield-series Atom chips. The Indian handset maker is said to be preparing to introduce a new smartphone brand for the Medfield devices, rather than sticking with its own branding that is currently tied to feature phones and a single budget-priced Android handset.

Intel showed off a Medfield phone last month at CES, where ARM-based devices dominated the new Android products. The device, which is believed to be headed to European carrier Orange, integrates a 1.6GHz Atom processor and a 4.0-inch display. The Lava handset is expected to be built with a 3.5- to 3.7-inch display, along with an eight-megapixel camera sensor.

Lenovo also brought its Atom-powered K800 smartphone to CES, showing off its larger 4.5-inch display with 720p resolution. Both the K800 and the handset that Intel brought were running Android 2.3; it remains unclear if the platform will be upgraded to Android 4.0 before the first models begin to arrive on the market.

The Intel partnership with Lava is expected to be formally announced this week at Mobile World Congress, unnamed sources have told Boy Genius Report.
