In the most basic sense, personal injury is any injury you sustain in an accident. However, it is important to remember that most personal injury attorneys focus their practice of serious or catastrophic injuries such as brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, disfigurement, amputations, and other types of injuries that will permanently impact your financial and personal quality of life.
What are some common causes of personal injury?
Personal injury can occur in a number of accidents. The most common cause of personal injury lawsuits is automobile accidents, including those involving trucks and motorcycles. Other common causes include dangerous or defective products, medical malpractice, improperly maintained or secured premises, and animal attacks.
What damages are typically sought in a personal injury lawsuit?
Most personal injury lawyers will seek maximum compensation for damages including medical and rehabilitation expenses, lost wages, property damage, lifestyle modifications, physical pain, and emotional suffering.
Many personal injury attorneys also handle wrongful death cases. In these cases, surviving family members may be entitled to damages including end of life expenses, projected future financial contributions, and projected future earnings. An experienced personal injury attorney will best be able to help you determine what you are entitled to.
Should I hire an attorney for a personal injury claim?
You should always consult with an attorney when you are injured in an accident. Many insurance companies will do whatever they can to minimize your settlement. Unfortunately, taking an insurance settlement waives your right to legal recourse.
An aggressive personal injury attorney will carefully assess all aspects of your case. Taking into account the financial, physical, and emotional damages your accident has caused, he will then be able to fight to secure for you the largest settlement possible.
If you have been injured or if a loved one has been killed in any type of accident in the Chicago, Illinois area, please visit the website of Harvey L. Walner & Associates, Ltd. for more information on your right to seek full compensation at www.walnerlaw.com.

Automotive Aftermarket in North America
http://www.reportlinker.com/p0184157/Automotive-Aftermarket-in-North-America.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Automotive
?
Demand to increase 3.2% per annum through 2016
?
The North American light vehicle aftermarket is projected to grow 3.2 percent annually to $85.5 billion in 2016. Gains will be fueled by the expansion in size and increasing age of the North American light vehicle fleet, which includes a rising number of vehicles in prime aftermarket service age: five to ten years for many components. Additionally, as the regional economy improves and unemployment rates decrease, average miles driven per vehicle will climb along with travel to and from work. Continuing improvements in vehicle component durability will prevent sales from rising more rapidly through 2016, as will increased monitoring of vehicle systems by advanced onboard electronics, alerting owners of any performance issues. This will reduce the need to make major repairs, although these losses will be offset somewhat by the ensuing maintenance work and sales of minor repair parts. Increasing price pressures from aftermarket parts sourced from low labor cost countries will also dampen sales growth in dollar terms.
?
Electronic products to be fastest growing segment
?
The fastest growth among the major aftermarket product segments will be registered by electronic products. Suppliers of items such as controls, modules, and sensors will be the beneficiaries of the further development of advanced vehicle systems and the rising amount of electronic content found in light vehicles. Mechanical products -- which include automotive filters, brake parts, drivetrain components, engine hard parts, and transmissions -- will continue to be the largest aftermarket segment, accounting for 38 percent of all sales in 2016. Demand gains will be tempered by the rising quality of these already highly durable mechanical products. Aftermarket sales of exterior and structural products are forecast to grow in line with the overall market through 2016, decelerating from the 2006 to 2011 period. Increased demand for higher priced items like performance tires and advanced glass products, including solar control windows and electrochromic mirrors, will help spur this rise. Value gains will be restricted, however, by improved tire quality and moderating raw material costs. Electrical parts are expected to record a similar rise in demand, limited by the long useful life of many products in this segment and stabilizing raw material prices, which will reduce inflationary pressures and market increases in dollar terms.
?
Professional service providers to dominate sales
?
Professional service providers account for the vast majority of demand for light vehicle aftermarket parts, representing 85 percent of total sales in 2011. The professional service provider market is expected to see faster growth than the doit- yourself (DIY) market through 2016 due to the increasing complexity of modern vehicle systems and components, which makes it more difficult for DIYers to do some types of maintenance and repair work.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Researchers have identified a way in which men can develop prostate cancer after contracting trichomoniasis, a curable but often overlooked sexually transmitted disease.
Previous studies have teased out a casual, epidemiological correlation between the two diseases, but this latest study suggests a more tangible biological mechanism.
John Alderete, a professor at Washington State University's School of Molecular Biosciences, says the trichomoniasis parasite activates a suite of proteins, the last of which makes sure the proteins stay active.
"It's like switching a light switch on," he says. "Then, if you don't control the brightness of that light, you can go blind. That's the problem."
Alderete and colleagues at WSU and Washington University in St. Louis report their findings in the recent PLoS Pathogens.
Caused by a protozoan parasite, trichomoniasis is often referred to as the most common curable sexually transmitted infection. However, most infected people have no symptoms, so it often goes untreated.
"Most women, it's the Number One sexually transmitted infection," says Alderete. "We're going to have at least 10 million women infected this year and an equal number of men because they all get infected if they come into contact with an infected partner."
Infected women have a greater risk of pregnancy complications and HIV. Infected men have a 40 percent greater chance of developing prostate cancer, according to a 2006 study led by Siobhan Sutcliffe, a Washington University epidemiologist and co-author of the recent PLoS Pathogens paper.
Sutcliffe cautions that the epidemiological link she found is not conclusive and compares the science to the early connections drawn between smoking and lung cancer.
"It's still in a really exploratory phase," she says.
A study after her 2006 research found no connection between trichomoniasis and prostate cancer, while a third out of Harvard found an even greater likelihood of cancer in infected men.
This latest study, she says, "is providing a molecular mechanism that might explain that association."
Much of the study was done in a single building, WSU's Biotechnology and Life Sciences Building, and involved two of the more accomplished researchers on the Pullman campus.
"This is just coincidence. I've only been here five years," says Alderete. "And when I arrived here five years ago, I had no clue that we would be going in this kind of direction. But the more I read and the more we talked in the hallways, the more it became clear that, wait a minute, we may have something here between us."
WSU cancer researcher Nancy Magnuson is an expert on the protein PIM1, a promoter of cancer cell growth, and identified the protein in the cascade of proteins leading from trichomoniasis to prostate cancer. WSU molecular biologist Ray Reeves brought to bear his expertise in HMGA1. The protein turns genes on and off and ended up being the actor making sure other proteins in the trichomoniasis-to-cancer sequence stay on.
Alderete hopes knowledge of the mechanism will lead to better diagnosis and treatment.
"What this is also doing is telling the world, 'People, this is a latent infection,'" he says. "'You guys out there, if you've been exposed to it, you've got it in there, and we need now a diagnostic for you.'"

With some help from Northern Savings Credit Union, Prince Rupert?s two Cops for Cancer ?Tour de North? riders are $1,200 closer to their $8,000 fund raising goal for pediatric cancer treatment and research.
The credit union held a barbecue on Friday afternoon organized by Donna Farwell, Assistant Branch Manager and head of the Cops For Cancer committee, as well as a bake sale a few weeks ago to help contribute funds, with the community?s two riders also selling raffle tickets at the barbecue.
Bob Killbery and Jennifer Collins of the Prince Rupert RCMP will be the participating riders this year. Their journey will begin on September 14 in Prince George and will wrap up in Prince Rupert on September 20. This will be both of their first time doing the ride, with Killbery saying that 2012 was a perfect year to take part because not only was his daughter, Jennifer Collins, transferred to the community this year, but it is also his final year on the force before retiring.
Prince Rupert?s two riders are hoping to raise $8,000 between the two of them. The two feel this is a realistic goal to achieve, as each rider is expected to raise at least $3,500 before the ride.
Northern Savings has been supporting Cops for Cancer rides for the past two years now, with all Northline Credit Unions from Prince Rupert to Prince George partnering up with local RCMP riders for this great initiative.
Overwaitea Foods and Maverick Foods also contributed towards Friday?s event by providing food items for the barbecue.
All monies raised goes to the Canadian Cancer Society, funding not only pediatric cancer treatment and research but also facilities like Camp Goodtimes.

In the wake of 10 deaths due to West Nile virus, and hundreds of infections, authorities in Texas are spraying insecticide in the Dallas region, hoping to curb the spread of the disease, which can spread by mosquitoes.
A total of 693 cases of West Nile virus infections, including 26 deaths, were reported as of Aug. 14 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The number of cases reported by this second week in August is the highest since 1999, when the disease was first seen in the U.S., according to the CDC.
About 60 percent of this year's cases have involved the "neuroinvasive" form of West Nile infection, in which the nervous system is affected. Such cases can cause inflammation of neural tissues, such as meningitis and encephalitis. More than 80 percent of all reported cases were from six states (Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota and California), and almost half of all cases have been reported from Texas.
Here are five things you need to know about West Nile virus:
1. What is West Nile virus?
West Nile virus is a type of virus called a flavivirus. Other viruses in this group cause dengue, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis. Flaviviruses are commonly transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes. West Nile virus was first identified in Uganda in 1937, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
2. How does West Nile Virus spread?
It is likely that West Nile is spread from birds to people through mosquito bites, the NIH says. Early fall is the time of year that mosquitoes tend to have the highest levels of the virus, and human cases tend to peak around this time.
The virus can also be spread through blood transfusions and organ transplants. Pregnant women can transmit the virus to their fetus, and mothers can transmit it to babies through breast milk, the CDC says.
West Nile virus cannot be spread by casual contact, or touching or kissing an infected person, according to the CDC.
3. What are the symptoms of a West Nile infection?
About 80 percent of people infected with West Nile show no symptoms at all, according to the CDC.
The other 20 percent have symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands. Some develop a rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms may last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
Severe forms of West Nile, which affect the nervous system, can be life-threatening. The NIH says that the following symptoms need prompt medical attention: muscle weakness, stiff neck, weakness in one arm or leg, confusion or a change in ability to think clearly and loss of consciousness or coma.
4. How can I prevent catching West Nile?
The CDC recommends using an insect repellent that contains one of the following ingredients: DEET, picardin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (or a synthetic version of this oil, called PMD), or IR3535. These ingredients are suggested by the Environmental Protection Agency because they provide reasonably long-lasting protection against mosquito bites.
The CDC also suggests wearing long sleeves and pants, or staying indoors, at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and so removing standing water from flower pots, pet dishes, buckets and barrels can reduce the risk of transmission. Children's wading pools should be emptied and stored on their sides when not in use.
5. How is West Nile virus treated?
There is no treatment for West Nile virus infections, according to the CDC.
Mild symptoms can resolve on their own. People with severe symptoms may need to be hospitalized and receive intravenous fluids or help with breathing, the CDC says.
Pass it on: Authorities in Dallas are spraying insecticide, hoping to curb the spread of the West Nile Virus, which has killed 10.

Of the 14 swing states, 13 saw their unemployment rates go up, reports CNBC's Jane Wells; and Dana Milbank, The Washington Post, weighs in.
By Reuters
Unemployment rates rose in July in almost every state, including those where the presidential election fight is expected to be fiercest, according to data released on Friday by the Labor Department.
Altogether, jobless rates rose in 44 states. Rates dropped in Idaho, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia, and were unchanged in four states: California, Hawaii, Ohio and Utah. (Click here for state-by-state rates.)
As the country moves closer to November's election day, voters' attention is squarely focused on the economy and a national jobless rate hovering above 8 percent.
Because of the unique U.S. political system in which states cast electoral votes for president, the contest between President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney is heating up in seven states where polling suggests voters are undecided.
In those states - Nevada, Florida, Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia and Iowa - jobless rates all rose or were flat in July. Nevada again had the highest rate in the nation at 12 percent, while Florida's 8.8 percent and Colorado's 8.3 percent were both at or above the July national rate of 8.3 percent.
In addition to being a perennial battleground state, Florida this year is home to the Republican convention where Romney will officially become the party's candidate.
?
Obama has been in office since the recession ended in mid-2009, and many consider the election a referendum on his performance on the economy. A majority of Americans view the economy as the most important issue facing the country, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.
?
Romney has hammered Obama about employment conditions. A recent Gallup poll found that 37 percent of Americans approve of Obama's job creation efforts, compared with 40 percent in February.
?
One of the victories Obama touts is the turnaround in Michigan, a state whose fortunes are tied closely to the automobile industry. In the 2008 election, Michigan consistently held the highest jobless rate in the country. Obama pushed through a bailout package for the auto industry during the height of the financial crisis.
?
Still, Michigan is considered a battleground state that is only leaning toward Obama. In July, its jobless rate shot up to 9 percent from 8.6 percent in June.
?
Iowa is considered a toss-up between Obama and Romney, and the president recently made a three-day visit there trying to energize the independents and Republicans he won over in 2008. Although the state's jobless rate remains low, it increased to 5.3 percent from 5.1 percent last month.
?
In North Carolina, the rate rose to 9.6 percent in July from 9.4 percent. The Democrats will hold their national convention to rally around Obama next month in the swing state, which is expected to go to Romney.
?
July's rate was 8.3 percent in Arizona, 8.2 percent in Indiana and 7.2 percent in Missouri - also all battlegrounds expected to vote for Romney.
?
Unemployment rates can rise because more people, encouraged by glimmers of an improving economy, re-enter the workforce. That type of hope, though, was not apparent in most of the states, said Philippa Dunne and Doug Henwood, editors of The Liscio Report, an economic newsletter.
?
"Of those states reporting statistically significant increases, only four - Alabama, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania - reported increases in their labor forces, which can mean job-seekers were more hopeful about their prospects," they said.
?
"In the big states of Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Virginia and Wisconsin, labor force contraction was accompanied by increases in the number of unemployed, so those increases were of the nasty kind."
?
Still, for most states, jobless rates are following a downward line. Compared with a year ago, unemployment rates dropped in 44 states and the District of Columbia, and rose in four.
?
Nonfarm payroll employment grew in 31 states in July and shrank in 19, the Labor Department said. California added the most jobs, at 25,200, followed by Michigan at 21,800, and Virginia at 21,300. New Jersey lost the most jobs at 12,000, followed by Missouri at 7,700, and Illinois at 7,100.?

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes returned to a Colorado courtroom on Thursday for a motions hearing, as defense lawyers and prosecutors set the stage for what will be a series of legal showdowns surrounding evidence in the high-profile case.
Shackled and clad in maroon prison garb with his dyed red hair fading to shades of pink and orange, Holmes appeared alert but sat silently at the defense table throughout the 30-minute proceeding.
The 24-year-old former University of Colorado neuroscience graduate student is accused of opening fire at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" at a suburban Denver theater on July 20, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.
Thursday's hearing centered on procedural and scheduling items ahead of evidentiary hearings on what information the University of Colorado has in its possession about Holmes that can be seen by law enforcement.
Defense attorneys argue that a package Holmes, a California native, sent to university psychiatrist Lynne Fenton falls under therapist-patient privilege and should be turned over to them.
Public defender Daniel King said at an earlier hearing that his client sought help from Fenton for his "mental illness."
A hearing on the privilege issue has been postponed until August 30, as prosecutors said they needed more time to review evidence that is being assembled in the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, prosecutors subpoenaed records from the university concerning Holmes, and defense lawyers have moved to block prosecutors from viewing those files as well.
Arapahoe County District Judge William Sylvester said he will hear arguments on that issue next week, and accepted 100 pages of non-medical documents presented to him by a university official at Thursday's hearing.
The judge will rule on whether even he can view those documents following a hearing on the issue next week.
In a separate ruling, Sylvester denied a defense request to have its own scientific expert present for all evidence testing done by authorities, but said the defense can observe testing done on items that may be destroyed in the process.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) ? While it doesn't provide a definitive answer, the Michigan State Police report on Roy Schmidt's efforts to recruit a fake candidate to run against him provides some clues to why he got into this mess when he switched to become a Republican.
"He said for basically fundraising," said Matt Mojzak, the 22-year-old Schmidt recruited to run against him. "Because if (Schmidt) didn't have somebody to run against, then (he doesn't) have (his) fundraisers, (he wouldn't) have money to pay people, (he wouldn't) have the money from fundraising," he said.
? ?
But what campaign?
Conventional wisdom would have been this fall's 76th House contest.
?
But what about down the road?
If he wins in the fall, Schmidt is term-limited in the House. Four years and he's out.
Could one clue to his political future be in this text from Speaker of the House Jase Bolger?
"What I may love best is that Brewer wasn't going to help u for Mayor. Now u don't need him...." Bolger wrote as he and Schmidt talked about efforts by Schmidt to switch from the Democrats to the GOP, and find a weak candidate to run against him as a Democrat in the fall.
The Bolger text suggests that Michigan State Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer wouldn't help Schmidt in an eventual run for mayor of Grand Rapids.
?
While downplaying the text as small potatoes compared to the larger controversy, a? spokesman for Brewer? wouldn't comment on it directly.
Bolger spokesman Ari Adler said he was aware of talk over the years about a Schmidt run for Mayor, but did not know the specifics behind the text.
?
Schmidt held a 1st Ward seat on the city commission for 16 years before he was elected to the Michigan House.
Friday, Schmidt spokesman John Truscott said the representative doesn't know where that comment came from, and that a mayoral run would make no sense.
Assuming he's re-elected to the House this fall, Schmidt would have to step down before the end of his term if he won the part time job as mayor in three years.
But consider this.
Add Schmidt's 16 years on the commission with another four as mayor, and Schmidt would increase the small city pension collected by elected officials for a job sources say he's always wanted.
Of course, he'd need to win first, and that could be expensive.
Mayor George Heartwell, who told 24 Hour News 8 he hasn't decided whether he'll seek reelection in 2015, figures candidates in a contested? mayor's race could spend more than $150, 000 each, making fundraising a big challenge.
And that's where the two political parties come into to play.
While the mayor's race is non-partisan, it helps to have friends who can raise a lot of money from outside the city.
? ?
As for a Schmidt candidacy for mayor, Heartwell says his former commission colleague shouldn't bother.
?
"He doesn't have a prayer after the shenanigans," Heartwell said.

The west is having one of the worst wildfire seasons in decades. So far 6.4 million acres have burned, and on Wednesday Idaho residents were evacuated to avoid another massive wildfire.

On Wednesday, hundreds of residents of two small Idaho towns were packing their belongings and clearing out of the way of a massive wildfire burning in a gulch a few miles away and expected to hit town later this week.
Wildfires also tormented homeowners in Washington, Oregon and California, as arid conditions kept fire crews busier than usual across the region.
Jennifer Smith of the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, said not only are more wildfires occurring in the West this year than last, but the nation's fires have gotten bigger.
As of Wednesday, 42,933 wildfires had been reported in the US this season, burning 6.4 million acres. The 10-year average for this period is 52,535 fires but covering only 5 million acres, she said.
"Nevada has been hammered, and Idaho has some big ones that are going to burn until the snow falls," Smith said.
Idaho's Trinity Ridge Fire has burned more than 100 square miles in the past two weeks. It's bearing down on Pine and Featherville, recreation getaways in the mountains 105 miles northeast of Boise.
"It's not a question of if, but when," Boise National Forest Spokesman Dave Olson said of the fire reaching Featherville's outskirts.
On Wednesday, there was a steady stream of traffic with people leaving Pine and Featherville, a town with a single main street, saloon, motel, cafe and a handful of other shops. The area has 450 homes, with about half inhabited year-round and the others serving as summer and weekend retreats.
A veil of smoke has loomed over Featherville for several days, a signal for many that evacuation orders may soon be coming. Officials say a mandatory evacuation order could be issued within 24 to 36 hours.
Lorie Winmill, a 44-year-old who works at Cyndie's Featherville Cafe, was emotional Wednesday as she loaded her vehicle, consoled her sobbing 4-year-old granddaughter, Lizzie, and prepared to stay with friends elsewhere.
"This is the only home Lizzie has ever known," Winmill said, tearing up herself.
Fire crews are battling a total of nine big fires in Idaho, including one in the Salmon-Challis National Forest that stranded 250 rafters floating the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Authorities closed a backcountry access road due to falling boulders and debris caused by the blaze. Some of the floaters were stuck for two days before authorities began shuttling them out Wednesday.
In central Washington, hundreds of firefighters used planes, helicopters and bulldozers to battle a large blaze, but authorities said it could be some time before they know exactly how extensive the property damage is.
Incident commander Rex Reed said Wednesday afternoon that the Taylor Bridge Fire had scorched about 22,000 acres, or roughly 34 square miles. At least 60 primary residences have been destroyed, but conditions were still too dangerous to come up with an exact count, Reed said.
Crews hoped to increase containment levels by Wednesday evening, but officials were keeping a wary eye on conditions forecast for later in the week. The fire near Cle Elum has caused hundreds of residents to flee.
The fire broke out Monday at a bridge construction site.
In Northern California, firefighters already dealing with extreme heat braced Wednesday for the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds as they tried to conquer several raging wildfires.

Standard Chartered has settled allegations that it helped Iranian clients dodge US sanctions, announcing a fine of $340 million from a New York banking watchdog.
The "civil penalty" disclosed on Tuesday came amid allegations that the London-based bank hid 60,000 transactions with proscribed Iranian clients worth $250 billion over 10 years.
The settlement was far from the worst-case scenario -- investors had feared the bank could lose its New York license -- and its shares surged 6.57 percent to HK$176.8 in Hong Kong trade Wednesday afternoon.
But the stock is still below its price of HK$188.10 on August 6, before New York regulators publicly accused the bank of helping Iranian clients.
The clients included the state-backed Central Bank of Iran and the National Bank of Iran, both accused by Washington of helping Tehran seek nuclear weapons and fund terrorism.
Under the terms of the settlement with New York's Department of Financial Services, Standard Chartered agreed to house a government anti-laundering monitor for two years at its New York branch.
It will also appoint in-house auditors to check compliance with US sanctions.
According to the bank, which is a household name in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, a detailed agreement will come soon, adding "the group continues to engage constructively with the other relevant US authorities."
Standard Chartered CEO Peter Sands was in New York at the time the deal was struck.
New York state's Department of Financial Services had questioned whether Standard Chartered should lose its banking license, effectively cutting off access to the US market.
"Standard Chartered had offered to settle for $5 million, so clearly an increase," said Morningstar analyst Erin Davis.
Davis added that even at $340 million the fine would not have a major financial impact on the bank. In the first half of this year it reported profits of $3.95 billion.
But Standard Chartered remains in the sights of other US regulators.
On Tuesday the Treasury Department told AFP the settlement would not halt its own inquiry.
"Our investigation continues. Treasury will continue working with our regulatory and law enforcement partners to hold Standard Chartered accountable for any sanctionable activity that occurred," an official said.
The Department of Justice also said it would also continue to "determine what actions might be appropriate."
Meanwhile the Federal Reserve said it continued "to work with the other agencies on a comprehensive resolution."
Standard Chartered hinted that settlements may also be reached with those agencies, saying "the timing of any resolution will be communicated in due course."
The "United Against Nuclear Iran" lobby group said New York authorities had been too lenient, and federal investigators should not make the same mistake.
"Any financial institution that is found to be in violation of Iran sanctions should receive the financial equivalent of the death penalty and lose its license to do business in the United States," the group said in a statement.
In the last decade the United States and allies have ramped up sanctions against Iranian banks, institutions and individuals in a bid to stop Iran's weapons programs.
The question of Iran's weapons is a hot button issue heading into November's presidential elections, with some powerful voting blocs pressing President Barack Obama to take a tougher line against the regime.

The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation suspended Syria in a meeting attended by its staunch ally Iran, in a move hailed early Thursday by the United States as one that sends "a strong message" to Damascus.
A statement issued at the end of an OIC summit in the Saudi holy city of Mecca said participants had agreed on "the need to end immediately the acts of violence in Syria and to suspend that country from the OIC."
The final statement said there had been "deep concern at the massacres and inhuman acts suffered by the Syrian people."
OIC chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told a news conference the decision sent "a strong message from the Muslim world to the Syrian regime."
"This world can no longer accept a regime that massacres its people using planes, tanks and heavy artillery," he added.
It was "also a message to the international community stating that the Muslim world backs a peaceful solution (in Syria), wants an end to the bloodshed and refuses to let the problem degenerate into a religious conflict and spill over" into the wider region, Ihsanoglu said.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that "today's action underscores the Assad regime's increasing international isolation and the widespread support for the Syrian people and their struggle for a democratic state that represents their aspirations and respects their human rights,"
The OIC "sent a strong message to the Assad regime by suspending Syria's membership in the OIC," Nuland said from Washington.
"The United States commends the OIC for its action and commitment to a peaceful resolution in Syria."
The emergency summit of the world's largest Islamic bloc opened late Tuesday with the suspension proposal put forward by a preparatory meeting of foreign ministers, a symbolic attempt to pile pressure on Damascus over its deadly crackdown on a 17-month uprising.
The move by the OIC, which represents 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, is aimed at further isolating Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's embattled regime, but its effect is seen as being largely symbolic.
Syria was suspended from the Arab League last year over its clampdown on the uprising that Assad characterised as a plot by Western and rival powers to overthrow his regime.
The meeting called for the "immediate implementation of the transitional peace plan and the development of a peaceful mechanism that would allow building a new Syrian state based on pluralism, democratic and civilian system."
It also urged the UN Security Council to "assume fully its responsibility by stopping the ongoing violence and bloodshed in Syria and finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the Syrian crisis."
The participants also stressed "the principal responsibility of the Syrian government for the continuation of violence and bloodshed."
Algeria, Pakistan and Kazakhstan had called for the final statement of the summit, to which Damascus was not invited, to also pin blame on the armed opposition for the bloodshed in Syria, accor to informed sources at the summit.
And Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi proposed the formation of a committee grouping his country with key players Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to try to find a settlement to the Syrian conflict, a delegate had said.
Saudi King Abdullah presided over the meeting, attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad whose country has openly criticised the push to suspend Syria.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Monday criticised the move to suspend Syria's membership of the OIC, saying it would not resolve the conflict and was not in line with the group's charter.
However, a source close to the participants told AFP that the Islamic Republic which had repeatedly voiced support to its Damascus ally met the decision with a "soft reaction."
Iran's president had avoided mention of the Syrian conflict in a 55-minute speech on Tuesday night as did Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah in his opening speech, indicating an accommodation between the region's superpowers who appeared on television footage to be chatting warmly during their meeting.
Tensions had been simmering for months between Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia and Shiite-dominated Iran as Syria has emerged as another arena for the longtime rivalry between the two regional heavyweights.
"There has been a clear change in the Iranian position towards Syria," according to a diplomat at the Mecca summit.
In another conciliatory move, King Abdullah, whose country hosts the OIC headquarters in its Red Sea city of Jeddah, proposed Tuesday setting up a centre in Riyadh for dialogue between Muslim confessions.
Iran is the Syrian regime's biggest regional ally and has pledged its full support for Assad.
In a second statement called the "Mecca Pact," the participants proclaimed their support for "Muslim people who are oppressed like the Syrian people."
It underlined the summit's support for "the oppressed Muslim peoples... who face the combat aircraft and heavy guns of the regular armies as is the case of the Syrian people."
The statement backed cooperation between Muslim states, the fight against divisions between Muslims, promotion of "moderate" Islam and the "fight against terrorism and the thinking behind it."
It described as a "crime against humanity" the Myanmar government's handling of minority Muslims and reiterated support for the Palestinians.

Kinship care usually also provides continuity -- a child raised by a grandparent, for example, is being raised by someone they have likely had a relationship with for their entire life.? And continuity of placement is afforded high priority, too.
Placing siblings together is also another recognized priority in adoption placement. Splitting up brothers and sisters is considered a negative thing.
So what should happen when kids are placed with a foster family as newborns because of neglect from biological parents, and then relatives step forward and want to adopt? And what if those relatives are parenting a sibling that the foster parents sent away after one month? This story raises?these conflicts among priorities in adoption placement:
?Playing in her tiny plastic kitchen area, Jada is very much in charge. "I cook," the 3 year old announces. So what do you think?? How should this case be resolved?? Of course, it's too late now for what the solution should have been -- child welfare authorities should have proactively searched for an in-family placement for the twins in the first place instead of waiting around to see if anyone would step forward.?Meanwhile, her twin brother Julian is outside, driving his electric car around their Roswell driveway, a confidant toddler behind the wheel.
This duo is unaware of the battle over who will raise them, and their adoptive parents hope to protect them from that battle as long as possible.
"We just decided maybe this was the time to do it," Lisa Williams said of the decision she and her husband Ted made to become foster parents more than three years ago.
Their own three children were almost grown, and they said they wanted to give back.
Ted talks about the day the twins came to them. "Imagine at noon having a very normal day, and by 6 p.m., you have three children living in your house."
Jada and Julian were five weeks old when they came to the Williams family. Their older brother Jayden was 16 months old. Lisa and Ted said three children was too much, so after a month, Jaydan was moved and they had just the twins.
* * *
When Jada and Julian were 15 months old, Tina Wilson's adoptive brother and his wife, Jeffery and Elissa Wilson, came forward and said they wanted to raise them.
Ted and Lisa wanted to raise them too.
* * *
Here is an example of the twists and turns. On February 28, 2011, Fulton County juvenile court awarded custody of Jada and Julian to Elissa and Jeffery Wilson and the twins were taken from the Williams' Roswell home and were sent to the Wilsons' McDonough home. But that only lasted nine days. That's when the Williams family successfully adopted the twins in Fulton Superior Court. They went and picked the twins up that day.
* * *
Tina Wilson's attorneys at The Fulton County Public Defender's Office would not talk to us on camera, but in a statement say Jeffery and Elissa Wilson are upstanding citizens who want to raise their niece and nephew and reunite them with their older half brother Jayden.
Tina Wilson gave birth to another set of twins a year ago. Right now, she is raising them.
"So this idea that you're going to have all of the biological mother's children raised together under one roof is an impossible dream, and it's a dream for which Jada and Julian should not be sacrificed," Rugh Johnson said.
Jada and Julian are three and a half years old.
* * *
The decision of who will ultimately raise them could come any day.
But how would you balance these various priorities now, over three years later? Would it make a difference that the kinship caregiver is the adopted brother, not the biological brother, of the biological mother? How do you factor in the fact that there was not previous relationship between these children and the kinship caregiver?? Does it matter that not all of Tina Wilson's children would be parented together regardless of what happens? But isn't it more likely that these twins will have a relationship with Tina's other children if they are being parented by Tina's brother? Does it matter that the foster parents had the opportunity to parent the older brother and rejected him?
Pretend you're the judge.? How would you rule?

NOTE: This is an update of an article written against Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 that has been updated for LightSwitch in Visual Studio 2012. To view the original version click here.
Welcome to Part 2 of the Beginning LightSwitch in Visual Studio 2012 series! In the last post we learned about tables, or entities, in LightSwitch and how to use the Data Designer to define them. If you missed it: Beginning LightSwitch in VS 2012 Part 1: What?s in a Table? Describing Your Data
In this article I want to focus on data relationships as we build upon the data model we started in part 1. Relationships define how information in one table corresponds to information in another table in a database. Or more generically, relationships define how an entity corresponds to another entity in (or across) a data source. You can think of relationships between entities like relationships between things in everyday life. For instance, the relationship between a school and its students is one that exists in the real world. Similarly, a real-world relationship exists between students and the classes that those students attend. In a data model, you may have one entity that contains students and another that contains classes they are attending. When you tie the two entities together, you create a relationship.
In the example we started in part 1, we?re building an address book application that manages contacts. In our current data model, we?re only storing one phone number, one email address and one address for our contact.
However, in real life contacts typically have more than one email, phone number, and address information. In order to model this in the database we are building through LightSwitch, we need to define additional tables and relate them to the contact table in a one-to-many relationship. A one-to-many relationship is probably the most common type of relationship you can define. In our case, this means that one contact can have many email addresses. One contact can have many phone numbers. One contact can also have many physical addresses.
Let?s start with email address. If we want to collect multiple email addresses for a contact we have a couple options. One option is to add a fixed number of email properties to our contact in the form of Email1, Email2, Email3. This means that we would never be able to collect more than 3 email addresses for any given contact. Depending on the type of application you are building this may be just fine. But if you start adding too many properties with the same meaning (in this case email) to your table, then it?s time to think of a different strategy. Instead we should create an EmailAddress table and define a one-to-many relationship.
From the Data Designer, click the ?New Table? button and define an entity called EmailAddress with two required properties: Email (of type Email Address) and EmailType (of type String).
For EmailType we?ll create an Choice List, which you learned about in Part 1 of the series. This property will capture the type of email, whether that?s Personal or Work. I?ve also chosen to make the maximum length only 25 characters ? we won?t ever need all 255.
Why don?t we make the maximum length 8 characters, which is the length of the longest value in the choice list? Because if we need to add a value to the choice list later that is a little longer than 8 characters, then we won?t have to change the data model. Disk space is cheap these days so it?s better to err on the side of longer max lengths so that all your data can fit into the underlying table. This avoids having to change the data model too often.
Now that we have our EmailAddress entity it?s time to define the relationship. Click on the ?Relationship?? button at the top of the Data Designer and this will open up the ?Add New Relationship? dialog window. In the ?To? column select Contact to set up the one-to-many relationship. The multiplicity is set to Many to One by default so we don?t need to change it. Multiplicity defines the type of relationship you want to create. In LightSwitch, you can also specify the multiplicity as One to Zero or One which means that only a maximum of one related entity would be allowed.
For more information on defining different types of relationships see: How to: Define Data Relationships
For information on how to model a many-to-many relationship in LightSwitch see: How to Create a Many-to-Many Relationship
You can also specify what happens to the email addresses when a contact is deleted. By default, this is set to ?Restricted?. This means that a user would not be allowed to delete a Contact if they had any Email Addresses. Leaving the setting makes sense if we were working with Customers who had many Orders, for instance, but not in this case. We want LightSwitch to automatically delete any Email Addresses when we delete the Contact, so set the ?On Delete Behavior? equal to ?Cascade delete?.
The description at the bottom of the dialog is there to help you understand what you are doing when setting up the relationship. Once you click OK you will see the relationship in the Data Designer which will show all direct relationships to the entity you are working with. Notice that a Contact property is now added to the EmailAddress entity. This is called a navigation property and represents the Contact to which the EmailAddress belongs.
Double-click on the Contact entity to open it and you will notice a navigation property to all the EmailAddresses for that Contact. Navigation properties are used by LightSwitch on screens to navigate through your data, so it?s important to model them correctly.
Now that we?ve got the EmailAddress table defined and a relationship set up, we need to delete the Email property we had previously defined on the Contact itself. Select the Email property and hit the Delete key. Alternatively you can right-click and choose Delete on the menu. Do the same to delete the Address1, Address2, City, State, ZIP and Phone properties as well.
Next, let?s add a PhoneNumber table in the same way we added EmailAddress. You might wonder why we need to create a new table separate from the EmailAddress. This is because an EmailAddress and a PhoneNumber are different aspects of a Contact and have no relation to each other except through the Contact itself. Therefore, we need to create a new table.
Click the ?Add Table? button and define the PhoneNumber entity with two required properties: Phone (of type Phone Number) and PhoneType (of type String). PhoneType will have a Choice List of ?Cell?, ?Fax?, ?Home?, and Work?.
Next add the relationship to Contact exactly the same way as before. While the PhoneNumber entity is displayed, click the ?Relationship?? button at the top of the Data Designer and specify the relationship to the Contact table.
Last but not least, we need to create an Address table to store multiple physical addresses for a Contact. Click the Add Table button and define the Address entity with the following properties AddressType, Address1, Address2, City, State, ZIP. Set the AddressType and Address1 properties as required. We will also specify a Choice List for the the AddressType property with values ?Home?, ?Work?, and ?Other?.
Now set up the relationship for Address exactly as before. While the Address entity is displayed, click the ?Relationship?? button and specify the relationship to the Contact table. Again we?ll choose ?Cascade delete? so that any Addresses are deleted automatically if a Contact is deleted. This makes sense in the case of Contact because if the user deletes the contact from the system all their information should be automatically deleted. Keep in mind, however, that you may not want this behavior in other applications. For instance if you are building an order entry application you would want to restrict deletion of Customers if they had any Orders in the system in order to keep the Order history intact.
Now when we open the Contact entity in the Data Designer you can see all the direct relationships.
Now that we have the data model designed, let?s quickly test it out by creating a screen. At the top of the Data Designer click the ?Screen?? button to open the Add New Screen dialog. We?ll talk more about screens in a future post but for now just select the List and Details screen. Then drop down the Screen Data and select Contacts. Once you do this, you will see checkboxes for the additional related entities we created. Select all of them and click OK.
To build and launch the application hit F5. Now you can enter information using this screen. Click the ?+? button on the top of the list box on the left to add new contacts.
Notice that LightSwitch read all the one-to-many relationships we set up in our data model and created a tabbed section of grids below the Contact details for Email Addresses, Phone Numbers and Addresses just like we would expect. The grids are editable by default so you can just type the related data directly into the rows.
Because we defined the relationships properly in our data model, LightSwitch was able to create a very usable screen for entering our data into all the tables in our database without much work at all. In the next post we?ll dive deeper into the Screen Templates and how to customize the layout of screens. Until next time!
Enjoy!
