Skift: BBC Sells Lonely Planet To Nashville-Based Media Company

Today BBC Worldwide officials and representatives of U.S. billionaire Brian Kelley announced the sale of Lonely Planet to a company controlled by U.S. billionaire Brad Kelley for AUS$75 million (?51.5 million).

The announcement confirms Skift's widely reported scoop from two weeks ago about the sale and the buyer.

According the terms of the deal the BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the British public broadcaster, is selling the travel brand to NC2 Media, a new Nashville-based digital media company owned by Kelley and run by Daniel Houghton and Michael Rosenblum. Lonely Planet CEO Matt Goldberg is stepping down from his post.

BBC Worldwide and NC2 Media issued a joint statement which read in part:

BBC Worldwide has been exploring strategic options for Lonely Planet over the last year and was keen to find a new owner that could bring greater focus and capital to the business.

Paul Dempsey, Interim CEO BBC Worldwide, says: "We acquired Lonely Planet in 2007 when both our strategy and the market conditions were quite different. Since then, Lonely Planet has increased its presence in digital, magazine publishing and emerging markets whilst also growing its global market share, despite difficult economic conditions. However, we have also recognised that it no longer fits with our plans to put BBC brands at the heart of our business and have decided to sell the company to NC2 Media who are better placed to build and invest in the business. This deal begins a new chapter for Lonely Planet and signifies the end of one for BBC Worldwide."

The BBC Worldwide had paid a total of ?130.2 million over four years to buy Lonely Planet. This selling price represents nearly an ?80 million loss in value during the BBC's ownership. This is despite an increase in both revenue and profit during the period. According to the BBC, "during the time BBC Worldwide has owned Lonely Planet its annual revenue has grown from ?810m in 2007 to ?1.08bn in 2012 - with profit increasing from ?111m in 2007 to ?155m in 2012."

The BBC Trust issued a statement criticizing BBC Worldwide's decision and the loss in value, stating ""Given the significant financial loss to Worldwide ... we have asked the BBC executive to commission a review of lessons learnt and report to the Trust with its findings."

Early reports state that offices in Oakland, CA, Melbourne, and London will continue to operate as is.

According to friends of Kelley we have spoken to, any acquisitions he makes are always well thought out: He's incredibly thorough, doesn't overpay, doesn't do vanity buys, and looks at them long term. Sources say Kelley -- whose primary residence is now in Boca Grande, FL -- is more likely the second or third largest landowner in U.S., as he downplays his holdings and a lot of his deals to buy land never surface in media.

his sale finally comes after BBC has sat on a LP sale decision for a few years now, going back and forth on their thinking of what to do with the brand that it bought at an inflated valuation in 2007.

Having bought 75% of Lonely Planet at the height of the bubble in 2007 for $143 million, and the rest in February of 2011 for an additional $67 million, BBC has gone though various bouts of buyer's remorse over the years, but has not acted on it beyond writing down the value of its investment twice. The BBC most recently valued LP at about $135 million, down $78 million since it bought it. About a quarter of LP's revenues now come from digital -- which includes its various mobile apps as well -- and that's where it sees the future for the iconic travel brand.

BBC's thinking on the future of Lonely Planet has likely changed over the 2012 calendar year, in part spurred by its rethink on the future of its commercial efforts and the limits it has on exploiting a complementary Lonely Planet brand and BBC Travel in the UK. And there's also the disappointing reminder of how little its competitor -- and superior in the U.S. -- Frommer's went for in its sale earlier this year to Google.

[CES 2013] In case you couldn?t tell by the monster amount of content coming from us this week, CES is currently going on and if you?ve ever been to it, or any other kind of conference, you know Wi-Fi is a must-have as cell phone service is usually nonexistent as thousands of people converge into one convention center. The problem is, at its current 2.4MHz spectrum, often times Wi-Fi at conferences don?t work that great either, leaving you without any form of communication for hours. The FCC announced today it?s going to make some changes to help you tweet out your photo of you posing with Wolverine as fast as possible, right from the convention floor. FCC Charman Julius Genachowski has announced they plan to open up 195 megahertz of wireless spectrum within the 5GHz band in order to ?relieve Wi-Fi congestion at conferences, at airports, and in people's homes.? The change will increase Wi-Fi speeds to at least 35 percent and the FCC is expected to review the proposal

74 injured when commuter ferry crashes in Manhattan

A commuter ferry slams into a New York City dock, injuring dozens on board. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Updated at 3:35 p.m. ET --?A commuter ferry packed with more than 300 passengers crashed into a dock in Lower Manhattan early Wednesday, injuring 74, at least two critically. Nine people were also in serious condition, officials said.

The force of the crash tossed some morning commuters in the air and sent others tumbling down stairs, witnesses said.

?Everybody got jolted right out of their seats,? passenger Sean Boyle told NBC 4 New York, adding that it felt like the vessel went "full speed right into the pier.?

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

After the accident, a large gash could be seen in the underside of the ferry, which was operated by Seastreak and originated from Highland, N.J., around 8 a.m.

Aerial footage showed people strapped to stretchers, their heads and necks immobilized, with firefighters swarming the ferry?and surrounding areas.

?We were pulling in like we normally do every day, and the next thing I know, I was six feet in the air,? rider Ashley Furman told NBC 4 New York.? ?I woke up from getting knocked out six feet in the air behind me. Thank god I?m OK and I?m not on a stretcher like everybody else.?

One of those in?critical condition was rushed to surgery with a head injury, a spokesperson with the New York Police Department said. A total of 326 people, including five crew members, had been aboard the vessel.

It was not known what caused the crash, which occurred?at Manhattan's Pier 11, near Wall Street. Weather conditions were normal Wednesday morning, and no mariner warnings had been posted before the 8:45 a.m. accident happened,?NBC 4 New York reported.

According to James Barker, Seastreak?s president, the ferry?s captain was at the controls when the vessel crashed. Barker said the captain had passed a breathalyzer test, and authorities were still waiting for results of a drug test ? both of which are routine tests to be taken in accidents such as this one, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

He added that the captain, a 10-year veteran of Seastreak, was cooperating with authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board launched a full investigation into the crash, and was working with the Coast Guard.

Seastreak commuter service offers rides from the New York metropolitan area to and from New Jersey, according to its website.

Wednesday's ferry accident was not the only one in recent New York history. In 2003, a Staten Island ferry got into an accident when its pilot, suffering from fatigue and on painkillers, passed out at the wheel; 11 people were killed. In May 2010, due to a mechanical malfunction, the same?ferry smashed into a pier, injuring nearly 40 people.?

Rob Ryan Fired: Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Not Returning

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was fired Tuesday after his injury-depleted unit struggled in a pair of season-ending losses that kept the Cowboys out of the playoffs for a third straight year.

Ryan was let go a day after running backs coach Skip Peete was fired, and less than a week after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said things were going to get "uncomfortable" at team headquarters in nearby Irving.

"At this time, the decision has been made to move forward in a different direction philosophically on defense," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in a statement. "I have an immense amount of respect for Rob as a person and as a football coach."

Ryan spent two seasons with the Cowboys after he was fired two years into the same job in Cleveland. He didn't hide his displeasure over being let go by the Browns before the Cowboys played them this season. He struck a different tone Tuesday.

"I enjoyed my time here," Ryan told The Dallas Morning News. "I have no hard feelings. But it doesn't matter if I coach here or not. I will find another spot."

The Cowboys finished with four defensive starters on injured reserve, including both Sean Lee and Bruce Carter at inside linebacker ? a critical position for Ryan's 3-4 scheme. A fifth starter, nose tackle Jay Ratliff, missed all but six games with ankle and groin injuries. Nickel cornerback Orlando Scandrick was sidelined the last five games with a wrist injury.

Several Dallas players reacted with surprise on Twitter.

"It was a privilege to play under Coach Rob Ryan! One of the greatest," defensive end Jason Hatcher wrote. "Sad day. I'm hurting right now."

The Cowboys finished 14th in total defense this season under Ryan, the twin brother of New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, but couldn't stop the New Orleans passing game or the Washington rushing attack when they still controlled their playoff fate in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Drew Brees threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 overtime win for New Orleans. Dallas still had playoff hopes in the finale against Washington, but rookie Alfred Morris rushed for 200 yards despite quarterback Robert Griffin being limited by a right knee injury in the Redskins' 28-18 win.

The Cowboys were 19th in total defense in Ryan's first year but had one of the worst pass defenses in team history.

Following consecutive 8-8 seasons, Dallas is 128-128 since the start of 1997 season. The Cowboys have just one playoff win in that span.

Family of deceased resident donates nightgowns to McCormick

The family was so touched by the care their mother received at a London long-term care facility they bought new nightgowns for residents to say thank you.

The store owner was so touched by the Calgary family?s generosity that she later tracked them down and mailed them a partial refund as a way to pay it forward.

The nurses in the wing who cared for and loved the woman, who passed away days before Christmas, were so touched when they opened the big box of new clothing that they cried.

The family who made the generous donation didn?t want to be identified but they turned a heartbreaking loss into a small act of kindness that boomeranged from this province to another.

?We were just overwhelmed and thankful and happy,? said Cathy Bardawill, a registered practical nurse at McCormick Home. ?There?s lots of good people in our world.?

Many residents on the Memory Lane wing at the home have dementia and can?t afford new open-backed nightgowns that make it easier to dress them, she noted.

But thanks to one family who wanted to honour their mother and say thank you, each resident on that wing received a new open-backed nightgown.

The woman, in her 90s, suffered from dementia and during the last two weeks of her life her relatives were with her around the clock.

?When we have someone we know is dying on our floor we really pump up the care to ensure we?re not missing anything,? said Bardawill.

Staff brought extra cots for relatives and fed them at meal time so they wouldn?t have to leave their mom?s side until her peaceful passing on Dec. 20.

The family, touched by the kindness of staff, later sent food for those who worked on Memory Lane.

Then one relative went to Geri?s Fashions and bought open-backed nightgowns, three in each size for both men and women for all 32 residents on Memory Lane.

?It was so nice of her to do that and so thoughtful,? said Lyrel Waldie, owner-operator of Geri?s Fashions. When she found out about the huge purchase ? the nightgowns range in price from $30 to $45 each ? she contacted the family in Calgary and mailed them a partial refund.

?It was kind of a pay it forward all around,? she said.

The family also sent two large hampers of hygiene products to the home, said Bardawill.

?They said to us that they knew their mom was in good hands and that we loved her. When you hear me say, ?We love the residents,? we truly do. We spend more time with them than we do our own families.?

Ohio gas prices on the way down again

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio gas prices are lower to start the new work week.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Ohio was $3.19 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's 13 cents lower than a week ago, and reverses two straight weeks of rising prices at the pump.

Ohio's prices are well below the national average of $3.30, which is about the same as last week.

The lowest average price in Ohio Monday was $3.10 in the Toledo area.

Experts say that economic worries related to the fiscal cliff deal could keep gasoline demand down and lead to lower fuel consumption ? and prices ? in January.

Samsung 2013 LCDs and plasmas revealed: quad core CPU, new menus and more

DNP Samsung 2013 LCDs and plasmas

As a leading manufacturer of HDTVs, Samsung has predictably returned to CES with a heaping armful of new displays of both the plasma and LCD variety. There are many common factors across the higher end models, including new A15 quad-core 1.35GHz CPUs that claim a 3.6x speed boost over last year's dual cores. That extra horsepower isn't being wasted either, as this year's sets are the first to decode HEVC video, and also feature improved voice control with natural voice commands, better recognition of gestures with support for two-handed gestures, pinch to zoom and more.

All are due during the first half of 2013 and include Samsung's AllShare DLNA client, as well as the S-Recommendation lists to help you find things to watch. The F8500 series plasma features brighter whites and blacker blacks as well as other picture quality enhancements compared to years past and is available in three sizes; 51, 60 and 64 inches. The flagship F7500 LED 3D TV is available in 46, 55 and 60-inches, while its bigger brother, the F8000 series, does what it can do and adds a built-in camera and mic; and is available in five sizes ranging up to 75-inches.

Samsung Smart Evolution Kit

Like the higher end 2012 Samsung HDTVs, the new models also feature a Smart Evolution slot for future expansion. Owners of last year's sets will be able to pick up a Smart Evolution Kit and add the new features of this years models without replacing their TV.

Tegra 4 versus the Samsung Nexus 10

Android Central @ CES

We didn't get to see NVIDIA's new Tegra 4 system running on any new tablet hardware tonight at CES, but we did see it in a highly controlled demonstration by president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. In the demo, NVIDIA put Tegra 4 up against the Samsung Nexus 10, currently the most powerful Android tablet available, with each loading 25 web pages over a local network (taking Internet latency and speed fluctuations out of the equation).

The end results? Well, NVIDIA would run a demo to lose, would it? We'll still have to wait a little while for some real-world testing. But for now, Tegra 4's looking pretty impressive.

Is B2B Social Media Marketing Behind B2C? | Social Media Today

The Perception

There seems to be a general perception that social media is better suited for B2C versus B2B marketing. ?This view is supported by a general lack of easily accessible social media success stories in the B2B space; on the Internet and at conferences.? But it is a misconception.

The Reality

Without a doubt, there are countless impressive B2C success stories, including the funny Bodyform video created in response to a disgruntled Facebook post, and the successful OldSpice video campaign. But social media is also extensively and successfully in use for B2B marketing. We simply might not hear about it as much because the examples are not as entertaining.

B2B social media is best suited to generate awareness.? To just pick a few examples, social media can help build thought leadership, increase the reach of events, or strengthen your brand. But social media can also foster action and engagement. Used right, the social tool kit can help you leverage advocates and influencers to spread your message, generate content for you, and even generate leads.

When a B2C campaign goes viral, you are likely to hear about it. When a Global 2000 company manages to increase reach, action, and engagement with their target audience, they either keep it quiet, as a competitive advantage, or it simply is not an entertaining enough story to get much coverage.

The B2B vs. B2C Marketing Difference

B2B marketing often requires a different approach than B2C marketing, mostly due to the difference in sales cycles. The B2B sales cycle is generally more complex and of a higher dollar value; and the purchase decision is less emotional.

For example, my co-author Michael Procopio writes in our upcoming book ?42 Rules for B2B Social Media Marketing?: ?A car is the most complex thing I buy in my personal life, and yet it seems very manageable. When buying the car, I do all the research on a few web sites, check with some friends on Facebook, and then finalize my decision with a test drive. My choice is as much emotional as based on facts. Once I pick what I want, I just need to get my better half to okay the purchase. Done.?

In B2B, on the other hand ? especially with increasing deal size - multiple people with potentially different pain points need to agree to the purchase. And, the sales cycle typically runs several months with different stakeholders participating at different points in the process. ?Unlike selling a piece of consumer electronics, many people can say "no," and the "wow, this is cool" factor is minimized by the many meetings to discuss the purchase.

B2B vs. B2C Social Media Tactics

B2B marketers have a smaller set of social media marketing tactics available than B2C folks, and generating immediate sales from a great campaign is rare.

Some social media sites have higher success rates for B2C than B2B marketing and vice versa. For example, Facebook has been most successful for B2C in terms of lead generation. This is true to a large degree because B2C marketing can provide instant discounts and offers that do not make sense for the sale of complex B2B products to large corporations. ?Conversely, LinkedIn is one of the most successful sites for B2B social media marketing but is not used much for B2C.

It has become common knowledge? - under the term pull marketing ? that the majority of B2B buyers search for a solution online instead of waiting to be contacted.? Social media can play a key role in improving the ?findability? of your information.? Fact is, as confirmed by the ?2012 Social Media Marketing Industry Report, that ?those investing a minimum of 6 hours per week in social media marketing saw improvements in search engine rankings. Marketers selling to other businesses were more likely to achieve this benefit (59%) than those selling to consumers (50%). ?

What B2B and B2C have in Common

It is equally difficult for B2C and B2B marketers to create a viral video. According to Chris Wilson in an article in Slate ?you might have better odds playing the lottery than of becoming a viral video sensation. ?

What is also common between B2B and B2C marketing is that both must create and frequently update compelling content, focus on engagement, and interact directly with their audience to be successful. The main difference in B2B is that you must think about the overall sales cycle, who is involved, and how to address each individual's needs with the right content at the right time.

I think there is no doubt that there is a lack of available B2B social media use cases. The upcoming book ?42 Rules for B2B Social Media Marketing? (due in December) is hoping to close that gap.

Cranky Fitness: Finding the Right Combination

Based on the picture above, what might you guess this post is about?

Hmm, I guess only brilliant/obsessive/imaginary followers of this odd little blog could have any clue.

OK, another hint: here's a similar picture I posted a while back:

Notice what's different? And so what sort of post might you be in for?

So if you guessed either:

a. A Quick Fix for Presbyopia; or
b. Some Boring-Ass Fitness or Personal Growth Analogy;

You'd be right!

Let's take 'em in order.

Miracle Presbyopia Cure:

Yep, the picture is of the reading glasses I'd been hooking through my gym lock as my one concession to exercising while middle-aged.? As I mentioned, it's embarrassing to stand there in a state of post-shower nakedness trying to find a young person to open your locker for you, so I started bringing reading glasses to the gym. But then a few weeks ago I went to an optometrist and discovered a miracle solution!

Caveat: it only works if you are also nearsighted and wear contact lenses, or are contemplating lasik surgery. Which I am not, as the idea of someone taking a scalpel to my eyes while I am wide awake makes me want to curl up into a small shivering sniveling ball of cowardly terror. NO KNIVES ALLOWED ON MY EYEBALLS! That's just one of those quirky rules I live by.

Though if someone wants to bake me one of these I may reconsider.

If you have to correct nearsighted eyes anyway, the trick is this:

Under-correct one eye.

This means you can read with one eye without reading glasses, and see distance with the other!

It also means you can render yourself almost blind, if either eye is called upon to execute the other eye's function. Probably not recommended for airline pilots or sharpshooters.

The more you're willing to give up in "general" visual acuity in each eye, the better overall results you can have. But your reading eye is going to suck at distance vision, and your distance eye is gonna miss those reading glasses because it won't be able to read squat anymore.

So What The Hell Does This Have to do With Fitness and Personal Growth?

The emphasis in both these realms tends to be on "balance."

It is generally assumed that you should be spending the most time and energy fixing the things you suck at, not spending a bunch of time getting even better at things you are already good at.

And this makes perfect sense a lot of the time, especially if you want to avoid rotator cuff injuries because you neglected weak muscles, or bankruptcy because you never learned impulse control, or divorce due to being a stubborn inflexible opinionated butthead.

But, I like to be contrary. ? And so to extend the presbyopia analogy: sometimes balance is bullsh-t.

There are lots of times in life where you get better results if you specialize at what you're good at.? You can often enjoy more success and happiness if you learn to delegate, trade favors, work around, or just say the hell with what you are untalented or unskilled at and focus on what you're naturally good at.

So my left eye can now read restaurant menus, hooray!? And if I need to figure out where the car is parked after the meal is over, left eye just laughs and laughs and says Not My Department, Crabby.? Those blurry things over there could be vehicles or they could be water buffalo wearing colorful sweaters. If you want to know what the hell is in the parking lot, check with smarty pants Right Eye over there.

I figure if you muster up enough "all around" skill or competence to avoid injury or catastrophe, you can often find ways to spend most of your time doing things you enjoy and are good at.? If you're a workaholic, sure, you need to take some time to drag your butt away from your computer and play and hang with loved ones. But you don't need to take time to clean your toilets if you can afford to pay someone else to.

Does everyone need to be a triathlete?? I hate swimming, and yet there's a part of me that has sometimes felt vaguely guilty that I never do it. Should I spend a bunch miserable hours in a pool proving to myself that I could swim a mile if I really wanted to someday? Or can I just be fine with the knowledge? that if I should someday trip over my own feet and tumble into a swimming pool, I can paddle to the sides and climb out, humiliated but alive?

(And by the way, for those of you who do venture into the deep end occasionally, check out this very amusing? "unbiased review" of the various swim strokes that an extremely helpful anonymous commenter alerted me to).

There is so much self help advice out there, whether it be health and fitness or career-optimizing or life-hacking or social-media conquering or family-raising or budgeting or finding inner peace. It can start to feel like we're supposed to be reasonably good at all that stuff.

But as I get older I'm getting more and more content to just be Left Eye, and let some of that stuff be out in the distance and pleasantly blurry.

What about you guys, are you all-around accomplished or are you specialists or a bit of both? (And I haven't forgotten about our ongoing New Year's giveaway; that post is coming on Wednesday!)

Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi KX-4 review - Pocket-lint

We?ve been looking at the 4x4 - or SUVs, as they?re now more commonly known - in many recent reviews. Although it?s been knocking about for a couple of years, we didn?t think it was fair to leave Kia?s Sportage out of the round.

In many respects, Kia?s a brand that has been playing catch-up. Always leading on value and its long warranty, it?s only with the latest cars that Kia?s really pulled level with, and in some cases overtaken, the established opposition such as Ford, Vauxhall, Renault et al. But there?s one area in which?it?s always led ? and that's 4x4s.

The Sportage nameplate?s been around for longer than VW or BMW have been making SUVs, period. And you need only to speak for more than five minutes?to someone who does a lot of towing for the name of the Sportage?s bigger sister, Sorento, to come up.

So in a funny little automotive roll reversal, can established SUV-maker Kia fend off the truck-load of competition that there now is in this market?

Another Schreyer special

To badly paraphrase Roland Barthes, car designers are like the modern-day builders of cathedrals. The opposite of the modern celebrity, you?ve likely never heard of any, nor would you recognise one in the street if they passed you. But if you?ve heard of one, it might be Peter Schreyer, Kia?s design chief. He designed the original TT while at Audi, the Mk4 Golf and as poached by Kia in 2006, since when?he?s put in train a design revolution that?s clear to see from the latest Kia-badged cars that ply our roads.

READ: VW Touareg 3.0 TDI review

And we reckon the Sportage is one of his better efforts. Can you recall what the model that went before it looked like? No, neither can we. But we bet you?ll recognise the car in these pictures, with its?handsome distinctiveness from most angles. Those wraparound lamps with their little rows of jewel-like LEDs make the rear view mirror appearance distinctive to the point of menacing, and the rest of the body?s got a slightly pumped-up, butch style that suits its SUV pretensions just right. Even at the rear, where most SUVs have ? to quote our own Ian Morris, "a fat arse" - the Sportage manages a degree of pertness, with neat little tail lamps rounding off a fine piece of design.

Plastic fantastic

Get inside though, and it?s not quite so rosy, looking like a shrine to plastic on the inside - even if most of that plastic is soft to the touch and of reasonable quality. No small part of this effect is due to our car?s greyish-beige colour scheme. We?ve sat in a Sportage with a black interior and although it felt like more of a cave, it looked way nicer than this one. Even the leather seats are a kind of grey that made them look and feel a good deal cheaper than they actually are.

But get the colour scheme right in here and it?s not too bad a place to be. You get a big and super-clear instrument cluster, complete with Kia?s trademark digital screen in the middle of the speedo, which can fling various bits of trip-related data at you in its incessantly red hue.

READ: Mazda CX5?2.2 TDI AWD review

Some of the little touches we really liked. The fact that the centre bin has a slot to put the key fob in is handy, it stops it rattling round in the centre console - although you can just leave it in your pocket and pull open the door without touching it, so you might argue it?s a superfluous feature. And we liked the back-up camera?s guides with their red-yellow-green graduated zones to help you work out just how far away you are from clouting that bollard. It?s just as well you have?a camera and sensors front and rear, too, as the rising belt line, thick C-pillar and tight rear window make reversing the Sportage into tight spaces a bollard-avoidance challenge. And while there?s the odd nice touch like the ones mentioned above, there?s less of the really clever engineering stuff or things that help out when you?ve got a family, as there are in the Honda CR-V we reviewed last week.

Dripping with tech

We specifically asked Kia to send us this KX-4, the top-of-the-range model. The company has an interesting options policy in the UK, which means that pretty much the only thing you can add to a model at a given trim level is metallic paint and an automatic gearbox. Kia?s argument is that, at a certain price level, it gives you more than the competition for the same money, and if you want extra toys you can upgrade to the next trim level for not a great deal extra. It?s kind of the antithesis to the way the premium brands work, but scrutinise the spec sheets and you?re likely to be won over. For most people, KX-3 or KX-3 Sat Nav will offer plenty of kit, but our KX4 adds a system which allows the car to parallel park itself, an engine stop/start button in combination with that keyless entry system and is the only model where you can option the higher power, 181 bhp 2.0 diesel engine.

Everything else you care to name - heated leather seats, a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, a full length panoramic roof, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming - is standard here, as it is on the KX-3 model. Given the generous spec, unless you?re terrible at parking, our advice would be to drop down to the KX-3 Sat Nav model and save yourself the best part of two grand.

Does that self-parking system work? You bet. You still have to work the accelerator and brake but like the systems from other makers, it steers the car into a space for you ? and it seems to need less margin than others we?ve used ? it squeezed us into a space barely eight inches longer than the car at either end. It?s only in getting it to activate in the first place that we?d quibble. We found that you had to drive along sufficiently slowly, having pressed the button where it?ll hunt for a space, that on a busy shopping street we reckon you?d get beeped for holding up traffic ? which kind of defeats the point a bit, doesn?t it?

Punching above its weight

We were a bit surprised when we saw our Sportage had 181 bhp on the spec sheet when it arrived, because most models in this price bracket and of this size, typically come with 130-160 bhp, so it sounded like a lot. And if you?re worried about moving into the world of the SUV and it feeling underpowered after your regular car, this is the engine to allay your fears. We won?t bore you or waste the space on the official performance figures, but instead tell you that, even with four wheel drive, it wasn?t hard to spin the wheels pulling away on a damp surface for the first half a second. But then the Sportage would hook up and frankly rocket you up the road.

Where it really scores is when you?re, say, climbing a steep hill or needing to do a quick overtake, where a lot of the SUVs we?ve tested have either needed to be dropped down a gear to keep the pace up, or proven noisy and clattery as they huffed and puffed their way up inclines. Not the Sportage though, which has bags of grunt and makes easy progress even when you?re loaded with family and kit. It means it stays refined and quiet most of the time too. And we?d bet it makes it a great towing vehicle.

Kia?s not forgotten about the eco side of the bargain either, so the manual version, which we had, emits just 158 g/km and features a stop-start system which kept working even when the temperature hit zero degrees. Just watch out if you go for the auto gearbox, which bumps up the CO2 several tax brackets, at 189g/km.

Analysis: US irked by Google chief's NKorea plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Google chief Eric Schmidt's plan to visit North Korea has put the Obama administration in the awkward position of opposing a champion of Internet freedom who's decided to engage with one of the most intensely censored countries.

The administration is wary for a reason. It fears that Schmidt's trip could give a boost to North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un, just when Washington is trying to pressure him.

It was only last month when North Korea launched a long-range rocket in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. While the U.S. and its allies are seeking harsher penalties against the reclusive communist government. That effort is proving difficult because of a resistance from China, a permanent member of the council. Beijing probably worries that its troublesome ally could respond to any new punishment by conducting a nuclear test.

U.S. officials are also concerned that the high-profile visit could confuse American allies in Asia and suggest a shift in U.S. policy as the administration prepares to install a new secretary of state to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has nominated Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate in 2004.

An imminent change of government in South Korea, a close U.S. friend, is raising questions about whether the two countries can remain in lockstep in their dealings with the North. Newly elected leader Park Geun-hye is expected to seek a more conciliatory approach toward North Korea after she takes up the presidency in February.

This helps to explain why the State Department, which has been a vigorous advocate of social media freedoms around the world, particularly last year during the Arab Spring, made clear it was displeased by the planned "private, humanitarian" visit by Schmidt and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. Their trip is expected this month.

"We don't think the timing of the visit is helpful and they are well aware of our views," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday.

Richardson, a seasoned envoy and a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Friday that the State Department should not be nervous. In interviews with CBS and CNN, Richardson said they had been planning to visit in December but postponed the trip at the department's request because of the presidential election that month in South Korea.

Richardson said he would raise with North Korea the matter of an American detained last month on suspicion of committing unspecified "hostile" acts against the state; the charge could draw a sentence of 10 years of hard labor. He'll also try to meet with the detainee.

He also said he was concerned about North Korea's nuclear proliferation and this was a "very important juncture" to talk and try to move the North Koreans in the "right direction."

Schmidt, Richardson said, was traveling as a private citizen. But the trip raises questions about whether Google has plans for North Korea.

Schmidt, the company's executive chairman, is a staunch advocate of global Internet access and the power of connectivity in lifting people out of poverty and political oppression. There are few countries where the obstacles are as stark. North Koreans need government permission to interact with foreigners ? in person, by phone or by email. Only a tiny portion of the elite class is connected to the Internet.

U.S. law restricts American companies' dealings with North Korea, which is subject to tough penalties because of its nuclear and missile programs. Imports of North Korean goods are prohibited, but travel to North Korea, exports of U.S. goods and investment in the country are allowed, subject to some restrictions, such as on exports of luxury goods.

Richardson has been to North Korea at least a half-dozen times since 1994, including two trips to negotiate the release of detained Americans. His last visit was in 2010.

The detainee, Kenneth Bae, is the fifth American held in North Korea in the past four years. That includes two U.S. journalists who were freed in 2009 after former President Bill Clinton traveled to Pyongyang and met with then-leader Kim Jong Il. Richardson said it was doubtful he and Schmidt would meet with Kim Jong Un, but he expected to talk with officials from the foreign affairs and economic ministries and the military.

North Korea could show good will by freeing Bae. But detainees risk becoming bargaining chips for the North in its tumultuous relationship with Washington. The U.S. retains nearly 30,000 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

Kim Jong Un's elevation to leadership after his father's death a year ago offered some hope of better relations. But after agreeing last February to an offer of U.S. food aid in exchange for nuclear concessions, North Korea derailed the deal weeks later when it attempted to launch a satellite atop a rocket that the U.S. believes was a test of ballistic missile capabilities.

Relations were set back further by the latest launch, this time successful, which the North again insisted was for a purely peaceful space program.

In the past year, Kim has made at least stylistic changes that hint at more openness, leading some commentators to call for a fresh outreach by U.S. diplomats. That's something that the nominee for secretary of state, Kerry, might support. But there's still little sign of substantive reform.

Hollis middle schooler wins international computer programming ...

News

By DANIELLE CURTIS

Staff Writer

HOLLIS ? Aaron Hill is not your average seventh-grader.

He spends his days taking free online courses from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other universities learning about computer programming. He researched and bought a computer the size of a credit card early last year, and in November, he added ?international contest winner? to his resume.

Aaron, 12, a student at Hollis Brookline Middle School, won the computer programming contest, sponsored by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the makers of the tiny computer, for writing a program, which he named ?PySnap,? for doing time-lapse photography using the Raspberry Pi.

?I was really excited when I found out I won,? he said.

Aaron has been interested in computers and technology for as long as he can remember. When he was 8, he got his ham radio license. And when he was 10, he started learning computer programming, looking up online tutorials about the programming and teaching himself how to do it.

?He?s always been a little precocious,? his father, Lee Hill, said, laughing, at the family?s Hollis home.

It was when Aaron was looking around for more programming tips that he discovered the Raspberry Pi. He researched the tiny computer and bought one online.

He was on the foundation?s website when he learned about the programming competition, a mere two weeks before it was ending. He decided to enter, and took a suggestion from his family to create turn the computer into a time-lapse camera ? all before he even received his own Raspberry Pi.

He had to test the program on his laptop and said he wasn?t sure it would even work properly when he submitted it to the competition.

The program works by hooking the Raspberry Pi up to a webcam. The program then allows the user to program the camera to take a picture at a certain time every day, week, month or year. The images are saved, and can be looked at in sequence, to see how the scene has changed over time.

He found on Thanksgiving morning that his program had won.

?I just woke up and was going to do some programming and I noticed on the Raspberry Pi blog that there was a new post about contest winners,? Aaron said. ?Then I saw it was me.?

Lee Hill and Aaron?s mother, Ellen Groh, said they heard their son scream and thought he was hurt, until he starting running around the house yelling, ?I won! I won!?

Aaron is humble about his accomplishments so far, slightly embarrassed even, for the attention he has received over the contest win, but said he?s happy that his program was selected.

He received $1,000 for winning, and said he plans to save the money for programming work, or maybe school, later in life.

He said he?s too young to really know what he wants to do for a career, but that he?s sure it will somehow involve computer programming.

It?s a passion that his friends don?t really understand or share, but one that he is committed to.

In addition to winning the Raspberry Pi competition, Aaron has also worked with his family?s church to design an electronic ?wall? to display parishioners? prayers and thoughts during a ceremony. The program, which allows users to text a message to a phone number and display their message on the screen, was first tested out around Thanksgiving.

And Aaron said he hopes to enter more contests in the future.

He has plenty of ideas for computer programs and even applications for smartphones, including one that would allow the user to manage multiple computers, installing updates and doing other maintenance work, from their cell phone.

For now, however, he?s focusing on his online programming courses, hoping to perfect his craft before his next competition.

Luckily, he has his engineer father around to help with some of the tougher math problems in the course.

?The programming is easy for him, it?s the college level math that?s difficult,? Hill said, laughing.
