Skift: BBC Sells Lonely Planet To Nashville-Based Media Company

Today BBC Worldwide officials and representatives of U.S. billionaire Brian Kelley announced the sale of Lonely Planet to a company controlled by U.S. billionaire Brad Kelley for AUS$75 million (?51.5 million).

The announcement confirms Skift's widely reported scoop from two weeks ago about the sale and the buyer.

According the terms of the deal the BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the British public broadcaster, is selling the travel brand to NC2 Media, a new Nashville-based digital media company owned by Kelley and run by Daniel Houghton and Michael Rosenblum. Lonely Planet CEO Matt Goldberg is stepping down from his post.

BBC Worldwide and NC2 Media issued a joint statement which read in part:

BBC Worldwide has been exploring strategic options for Lonely Planet over the last year and was keen to find a new owner that could bring greater focus and capital to the business.

Paul Dempsey, Interim CEO BBC Worldwide, says: "We acquired Lonely Planet in 2007 when both our strategy and the market conditions were quite different. Since then, Lonely Planet has increased its presence in digital, magazine publishing and emerging markets whilst also growing its global market share, despite difficult economic conditions. However, we have also recognised that it no longer fits with our plans to put BBC brands at the heart of our business and have decided to sell the company to NC2 Media who are better placed to build and invest in the business. This deal begins a new chapter for Lonely Planet and signifies the end of one for BBC Worldwide."

The BBC Worldwide had paid a total of ?130.2 million over four years to buy Lonely Planet. This selling price represents nearly an ?80 million loss in value during the BBC's ownership. This is despite an increase in both revenue and profit during the period. According to the BBC, "during the time BBC Worldwide has owned Lonely Planet its annual revenue has grown from ?810m in 2007 to ?1.08bn in 2012 - with profit increasing from ?111m in 2007 to ?155m in 2012."

The BBC Trust issued a statement criticizing BBC Worldwide's decision and the loss in value, stating ""Given the significant financial loss to Worldwide ... we have asked the BBC executive to commission a review of lessons learnt and report to the Trust with its findings."

Early reports state that offices in Oakland, CA, Melbourne, and London will continue to operate as is.

According to friends of Kelley we have spoken to, any acquisitions he makes are always well thought out: He's incredibly thorough, doesn't overpay, doesn't do vanity buys, and looks at them long term. Sources say Kelley -- whose primary residence is now in Boca Grande, FL -- is more likely the second or third largest landowner in U.S., as he downplays his holdings and a lot of his deals to buy land never surface in media.

his sale finally comes after BBC has sat on a LP sale decision for a few years now, going back and forth on their thinking of what to do with the brand that it bought at an inflated valuation in 2007.

Having bought 75% of Lonely Planet at the height of the bubble in 2007 for $143 million, and the rest in February of 2011 for an additional $67 million, BBC has gone though various bouts of buyer's remorse over the years, but has not acted on it beyond writing down the value of its investment twice. The BBC most recently valued LP at about $135 million, down $78 million since it bought it. About a quarter of LP's revenues now come from digital -- which includes its various mobile apps as well -- and that's where it sees the future for the iconic travel brand.

BBC's thinking on the future of Lonely Planet has likely changed over the 2012 calendar year, in part spurred by its rethink on the future of its commercial efforts and the limits it has on exploiting a complementary Lonely Planet brand and BBC Travel in the UK. And there's also the disappointing reminder of how little its competitor -- and superior in the U.S. -- Frommer's went for in its sale earlier this year to Google.

[CES 2013] In case you couldn?t tell by the monster amount of content coming from us this week, CES is currently going on and if you?ve ever been to it, or any other kind of conference, you know Wi-Fi is a must-have as cell phone service is usually nonexistent as thousands of people converge into one convention center. The problem is, at its current 2.4MHz spectrum, often times Wi-Fi at conferences don?t work that great either, leaving you without any form of communication for hours. The FCC announced today it?s going to make some changes to help you tweet out your photo of you posing with Wolverine as fast as possible, right from the convention floor. FCC Charman Julius Genachowski has announced they plan to open up 195 megahertz of wireless spectrum within the 5GHz band in order to ?relieve Wi-Fi congestion at conferences, at airports, and in people's homes.? The change will increase Wi-Fi speeds to at least 35 percent and the FCC is expected to review the proposal

74 injured when commuter ferry crashes in Manhattan

A commuter ferry slams into a New York City dock, injuring dozens on board. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Updated at 3:35 p.m. ET --?A commuter ferry packed with more than 300 passengers crashed into a dock in Lower Manhattan early Wednesday, injuring 74, at least two critically. Nine people were also in serious condition, officials said.

The force of the crash tossed some morning commuters in the air and sent others tumbling down stairs, witnesses said.

?Everybody got jolted right out of their seats,? passenger Sean Boyle told NBC 4 New York, adding that it felt like the vessel went "full speed right into the pier.?

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

After the accident, a large gash could be seen in the underside of the ferry, which was operated by Seastreak and originated from Highland, N.J., around 8 a.m.

Aerial footage showed people strapped to stretchers, their heads and necks immobilized, with firefighters swarming the ferry?and surrounding areas.

?We were pulling in like we normally do every day, and the next thing I know, I was six feet in the air,? rider Ashley Furman told NBC 4 New York.? ?I woke up from getting knocked out six feet in the air behind me. Thank god I?m OK and I?m not on a stretcher like everybody else.?

One of those in?critical condition was rushed to surgery with a head injury, a spokesperson with the New York Police Department said. A total of 326 people, including five crew members, had been aboard the vessel.

It was not known what caused the crash, which occurred?at Manhattan's Pier 11, near Wall Street. Weather conditions were normal Wednesday morning, and no mariner warnings had been posted before the 8:45 a.m. accident happened,?NBC 4 New York reported.

According to James Barker, Seastreak?s president, the ferry?s captain was at the controls when the vessel crashed. Barker said the captain had passed a breathalyzer test, and authorities were still waiting for results of a drug test ? both of which are routine tests to be taken in accidents such as this one, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

He added that the captain, a 10-year veteran of Seastreak, was cooperating with authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board launched a full investigation into the crash, and was working with the Coast Guard.

Seastreak commuter service offers rides from the New York metropolitan area to and from New Jersey, according to its website.

Wednesday's ferry accident was not the only one in recent New York history. In 2003, a Staten Island ferry got into an accident when its pilot, suffering from fatigue and on painkillers, passed out at the wheel; 11 people were killed. In May 2010, due to a mechanical malfunction, the same?ferry smashed into a pier, injuring nearly 40 people.?

Rob Ryan Fired: Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Not Returning

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was fired Tuesday after his injury-depleted unit struggled in a pair of season-ending losses that kept the Cowboys out of the playoffs for a third straight year.

Ryan was let go a day after running backs coach Skip Peete was fired, and less than a week after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said things were going to get "uncomfortable" at team headquarters in nearby Irving.

"At this time, the decision has been made to move forward in a different direction philosophically on defense," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in a statement. "I have an immense amount of respect for Rob as a person and as a football coach."

Ryan spent two seasons with the Cowboys after he was fired two years into the same job in Cleveland. He didn't hide his displeasure over being let go by the Browns before the Cowboys played them this season. He struck a different tone Tuesday.

"I enjoyed my time here," Ryan told The Dallas Morning News. "I have no hard feelings. But it doesn't matter if I coach here or not. I will find another spot."

The Cowboys finished with four defensive starters on injured reserve, including both Sean Lee and Bruce Carter at inside linebacker ? a critical position for Ryan's 3-4 scheme. A fifth starter, nose tackle Jay Ratliff, missed all but six games with ankle and groin injuries. Nickel cornerback Orlando Scandrick was sidelined the last five games with a wrist injury.

Several Dallas players reacted with surprise on Twitter.

"It was a privilege to play under Coach Rob Ryan! One of the greatest," defensive end Jason Hatcher wrote. "Sad day. I'm hurting right now."

The Cowboys finished 14th in total defense this season under Ryan, the twin brother of New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, but couldn't stop the New Orleans passing game or the Washington rushing attack when they still controlled their playoff fate in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Drew Brees threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 overtime win for New Orleans. Dallas still had playoff hopes in the finale against Washington, but rookie Alfred Morris rushed for 200 yards despite quarterback Robert Griffin being limited by a right knee injury in the Redskins' 28-18 win.

The Cowboys were 19th in total defense in Ryan's first year but had one of the worst pass defenses in team history.

Following consecutive 8-8 seasons, Dallas is 128-128 since the start of 1997 season. The Cowboys have just one playoff win in that span.

Family of deceased resident donates nightgowns to McCormick

The family was so touched by the care their mother received at a London long-term care facility they bought new nightgowns for residents to say thank you.

The store owner was so touched by the Calgary family?s generosity that she later tracked them down and mailed them a partial refund as a way to pay it forward.

The nurses in the wing who cared for and loved the woman, who passed away days before Christmas, were so touched when they opened the big box of new clothing that they cried.

The family who made the generous donation didn?t want to be identified but they turned a heartbreaking loss into a small act of kindness that boomeranged from this province to another.

?We were just overwhelmed and thankful and happy,? said Cathy Bardawill, a registered practical nurse at McCormick Home. ?There?s lots of good people in our world.?

Many residents on the Memory Lane wing at the home have dementia and can?t afford new open-backed nightgowns that make it easier to dress them, she noted.

But thanks to one family who wanted to honour their mother and say thank you, each resident on that wing received a new open-backed nightgown.

The woman, in her 90s, suffered from dementia and during the last two weeks of her life her relatives were with her around the clock.

?When we have someone we know is dying on our floor we really pump up the care to ensure we?re not missing anything,? said Bardawill.

Staff brought extra cots for relatives and fed them at meal time so they wouldn?t have to leave their mom?s side until her peaceful passing on Dec. 20.

The family, touched by the kindness of staff, later sent food for those who worked on Memory Lane.

Then one relative went to Geri?s Fashions and bought open-backed nightgowns, three in each size for both men and women for all 32 residents on Memory Lane.

?It was so nice of her to do that and so thoughtful,? said Lyrel Waldie, owner-operator of Geri?s Fashions. When she found out about the huge purchase ? the nightgowns range in price from $30 to $45 each ? she contacted the family in Calgary and mailed them a partial refund.

?It was kind of a pay it forward all around,? she said.

The family also sent two large hampers of hygiene products to the home, said Bardawill.

?They said to us that they knew their mom was in good hands and that we loved her. When you hear me say, ?We love the residents,? we truly do. We spend more time with them than we do our own families.?

Ohio gas prices on the way down again

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio gas prices are lower to start the new work week.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Ohio was $3.19 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's 13 cents lower than a week ago, and reverses two straight weeks of rising prices at the pump.

Ohio's prices are well below the national average of $3.30, which is about the same as last week.

The lowest average price in Ohio Monday was $3.10 in the Toledo area.

Experts say that economic worries related to the fiscal cliff deal could keep gasoline demand down and lead to lower fuel consumption ? and prices ? in January.
